As a regular and constant visitor 1 can only applaud their ambition. Their slogan, "A library says a lot about a town,'is, in my view, right on. Uike ai fundraisers you can pledge money, buy a sweatshirt, etc. But its their latest twst on revenue of g eneration thqat 15, in my view, sheer genlus. Ves, Rt is e inspired, a guaranteed money-maker, bound to bring io in buckets f cash. You may be wondering, is it a ip lottery, a bingo or a giant yard or bake sale? No, it's fax more effective than that. They have simply eliminated the date due cards that go ln the back of the books. Thats rnght, irs simple but ' ingenious. lnstead of having each book that you and yours take out clearly marked with a due date,- you now get a paper receipt, like a grocery bill, that lists al te books you have just taken out No malter how many books, you only get one piece of paper. You g take eight books out for your lads, two for your spouse and three for yourself, you get one piece of paper.* «What is going to happen to this paper? Ifs going to >get lost f course. Iril disappear into the maelstrom of papers and sohool work that fuIlmte house. The result of this cunning plan of the libraries-is crystai clear. Vast increases in overdue fines. The money is just going to pour in. Think of Rt, little pieces of paper floating around peoples' homes, vanishlng into the woodwork like socks out of a dryer. Books piling up, people not sure when they took themr out, you won't know they're overdue until -you get a notice in mhe mail. Our family alone will have a room in the new library paid for in overdue fines (well, me anyway). Yes, mhe consultant who came up with mhis. technolgical advance should' be- canonized by libraries everywhere. 0f course the staff is trying to put a- positive spin on this new development. "Just put it on the fridge," they happily carol to unsuspecting patrons. The fridge?. Have you see the front of my fridge? 'Ive stihi got pictures mhat Sarah did in preschool five years ago.. Not to mention fridge magnets fro *m1 every organization and service known to mankind, as weîî as a collection of four-year-oîd For Botter or Worse' cartoons. Theres no room and even if there was, i4f would just sit mhere, just like meé mrysterious containers filled wth who knows what mhat lurk in the back of fridges until they evolve into a new life form. 1 thought I had the library outfoxed by putting mhe date ýlip in mhe pocket of one of the books 1 took out. But then 1 suddenly realized they won't be putting pockpts in the backs of the new books they get. l'm" doomed, mayte I can work out some sort of rnonmily payment schedule, maybe even deposit money in advance, sort of like running a tab. Or even better, l'il just get Wendy to take mhe books out. Thars iR, put them on her caxd, that way it won't be my fault and it mifiht even be safer, for mhe next while anyway. Update: Congratulations to-,Simply Yummy, the' all1ergyfriendly bakery mhat I wrote about last winter. Their products are currentîy being test marketed by, Loblaws in Richmond Hill. Heres hoping mhat they axe able to go provinoe-widei Tey also have their products available for fundraiers. Co-founder Wencly Ashton Shimkofsky has published her first children s book, Branstorm.
