More pay cuts ahead Lot's see ifwe've got this right. The Ontario government under the leadership of Mike Harris -and what used to be knowni as Progressive Conservatives, has announced intention to cut the pay of daycare workers in public funded centres. On the other hand, "hi samegovernmont keeps promising Ontario's petulant.doctors that they will not suifer more cuts ini income. I fact, doctors have been promised that previous- limita on thefr incomes will be removed. that la, a pay raise lu likely. You may have read about the daycare workers' cuts. If implemented; daycare workers will each ]ose about $4,500 a year.'This for workers who now earn about $19,000 a year, according to the Toronto Star. That's a cut ofi 23.7 per cent and will bring thom close te minimum wage. Cornmunity and Social Services Minister proposes te use the money saved te create an additionaj 12,000 daycare spaces for the working poor. That's wonderful, and yes, we likely do need those additional daycare spaces. Parents on workfare undoubtedly will need accesu te some such services. ,But perhaps the real reason behind the proposaI lies hidden i finer print: the pay reduction will bring workers in subsidized daycare centres in lino with those in private daycare centres. Can you begin te, see the long-terni goal here? Get the government outta my face, lesu government la botter,- we ýdon'tneed- big brother. It's a page out of the Deform ]Reform Party manifeste. According te the Mike Harris gang, the Ontario taxpayers have grown tired of paying taxes. Not only would they rejeet tai increases: tax cuts have already begun. Ieres more te C orne. And that's wonderful, on the surface. But follow the bouncing baIl and mouth the words te the song. Bad guys, it seems, are al those. working for the' province of Ontario and drawing pay choques fr-om Ontario taxpayers. This> includes teachers, daycare workers, nurses and civil servants in various, capacities. It used te, include doctors. But doctors arepolitically powerfiil, vocal and wo't be pushed around. They push back Besides, this government seems te' understand the right of doctors te biH the system. Isn't that what freedom is all about? Consider, though, that while Ontario taxpayers won't stand still for a pay hike, the government thinks it quite fair that daycare workers pay an extra tax of $4,500. For that'what a pay cut amounts te:more tax. Think of any reduction in teachers' pay the same way: a tax hike. What is generally not recognized is that many groups of public servants, including teiahers, have given Up scheduled pay mncreases for three, four, five years now. So firat itIll be daycare workers. Teachers and nurses are already being linod up. Civil servants are being dumped overboard (the tetal should approach 20$000 before it's over) and want te bet? - they'Il be lined up for a pay cut, teo. v I - ou znou n itoy stuaonts wont back to achool on Sp.5.
