"Nearly *8-million worth of building permts was issued in MaRy l996asopposed to almost $7 million in the saine month in t.he previousdear,» said Edwards "Wat is even more encourag- ing is that we seem to lie able to sustain the s'aine amount of building permits in these months which are traditionally the start of the building season in our community,'he said. "W. issued over $8 million in the previous month and almost $8 million in May.» Although the majoit of per- mits were "regrettably for resi- dential development, Edwards noted that "some $750,000" in commercial -permits were issued for one prQject. A 2352-quae foot buildingr will be added to Invar Industrial Ltd.'s commercial plaza on Vic- toria Street. A pet supplies and food store will be housed ini the future unit, east of the excisting Sears ware- house and Sports Authority store. For the year to date, perniits totalling*$26.5 million have been prooessed in Whitby. While this figure is down con- siderably from the corresponding period mn 1995, this can lie attri- buted to the fact that the lion's share of last ers *53.9 million was due tote ongoing redeve- lopment Of the former Whitby psychiatric hosital. kPermits tota ling $40.2 million were issued for the *133-million project during the first five months of 1995.
