Like the steady hand of a surgeon, John Milmes wiil be steering the Hospital Council of Durhamn Region into the future. Mimnes, former chair of Cottage Hospital in Uxbridge, bas taken over the heim from outgoing Hospital Council chair Jean Achmatowicz of Ashburn. 'We're anxious tu ensure our hospitais are at the ieading edge," says Mimnes of the busy agenda ahead for the council in 1995-96. He cites a number- of issues the hospitai council will pursue in the coming year including expioring the feasibility of getting the seven local hoà-Pitals te create 'links" between each other through shares services. For exampie, Milnes expiains, the bospitai council is deveioping initiatives and programs for materiais, management which would enable hospitals te purchase their common supplies as one body which would generate cost- savings. David Brown, CEO at Commumity Memorial Hospital in Port Periy, explains that there are many similar producta hospitals purchase that hospitals may be able te purchase as a whoie te generate a cost-savings. Another initiative is te develop a common computer information network in wbich patient information couid be exchanged between hospitals electronicaliy. "The future couid be exciting if we could transfer patient information electronicaiiy," says Mimnes, offering, the termi "electronic chart" as a way of expiaining the proposed system. Ray Briggs, ýdirector of management information systems for both Memoriai Hospital, Bowmanviile and -Ajax-Pickering Hospital, is an example of hospitals sharing specialized resouroes to benefit the region. 'We need te pursue the vision of an integrated information system that wiii facilitate optiniizing health care resources and enbanoe the -provision of- high quality services in the region," advocates Briggs. "Confidentiality is a prime conoern for patients," he says. 'We don't want information available te those who don't need it. We have te make sure the appropniate security measures are in place." Another collaborative development is the sharing of Iaboratery testing which was being sent out of the region for processing. 'This wili resuit in significant cost savings te the region's hospitals,"t says James Criimb of Whitby Generai Hospital. This couid include producing accounting and administrative information on a consistent'basis and in tbe moat efficient manner, he notes. Through the. acute cire study conducted by the Durham District Heaith Council, a plan bas been deveioped for- the region regarding patient care. "Now 'that the Ministry of Health has approved the plan, we can go ahead and start meeting the goals of the acute care study and te implement them," says Milmes. One of the elements of the study was the creation of a- northern network between Community Memorial Hospital in Port Perry and Uxbridge Cottage Hospital. "ÀAil theý statistics show the amount of provincial funding for heaith care i 'n Durham Region is less than what is being provided in other regions," notes Milnes, adding that Durham le one of the fastest growing regions in- the province and has been histericaiiy underfunded. r Under current funding formulas we don't believe we are getting our fair share." Technoiogy has made it easier te discbarge patients earlier from a. hospital stay whicb heightens, the recognition of providing some acute care services in the home. 'These are areas that each bospitai bas te look at -and we want te ensure we're at the ieading edge."
