Petites bring home gold The Whitby petite AA ringette team won the Cambridge tournament over the weekend. En route to their win, they suffered a 6-5 loss to Huron-Perth in. their game opener, beat Sudbury 9-1 and Cambridge 8-0. Ini their final game of regular play, they tied Pickering 4-4 to give Pickering a second-place finish and Whitby third, requiring them to'play each other in the semi-finals on Saturday evening. S ilver belles i Markhaxn The Whitby belle B ringette team won a silver medal in the Markham tournament over the Christmas break. Whitby lost the opening game to Markham 8-6 but came back with victories over St. Clement 7-1, Stayner 5-3 and Jordan 9-4 to go to the final against an undefeated Markham team. The championship game featured outstancling goaltending, plenty of ofence and double- overtime. Whitby held a 3-0 lead after the first period but Markham came back strong with two quick goals and finally tied the game at 4-4 with 29 seconds left in regulation time. Both teams had numerous scoring chances in overtime before Markhamr-n scored in the second overtime with Whitby playing two girls short. .Scoring for Whitby were Melanie Davis with nine goals, five assists; Jillian- Shannon six goals, two assists;. At the end of the first period the score was tied at 1-1. Huron-Perth broke the tie wvith only 1:52 left in the game. Whitby responded with the tying goal by Jenna Clements from Michele Leni and Ja *de Blight at the 1:41 mark to force sudden- death overtime. Wasting no time, Whitby netted the game winner off a pass from Kailey Miller to Rachel Stewart to Jenna Clements to give Whitby gold. In the six games Whitby scored 32 goals and allowed only 14 through. strong goaltending by Jennifer Martel and defensive work by Jade Blight, Susie Cirabb, Michelle Leni and Heather Peel. Whitby hosts tournament The Whitby Ringette Association will hold the annuai ringette tournament Jan. 12-14. There wiil be 30 local teams and teams from Ottawa, Pembroke, London, Ennismore, Sunderland and Richmond 41111 in the tournament. Whitby tied Ajaxý in their third game. Scoring for Whitby was Kotarba with two goals and Church with the tying goal with 1:07 left in the game. In the fourth game against Hamilton, Whitby won 7-1. Amanda Joaquim and Kotarba scored two goals apiece with singles going to Jenninge, Fallis and Ilott. In the final game, Whitby defeated Ajax 5-4. Juniors defeat Pickering AfLer a slow start, the Whitby junior C ringette team started the new year with its third win. With only t.hreejunior-aged girls on the team and 10 tween-aged girls, the team has improved with every game. On Jan. 7, Whitby defeated Pickering 7-2, with great goaltending by Christine Parrot and outstanding defence by Teresa Bugden, Brianna Coombes, Becky Duncan and Sarah Powers. Robyn Dupont had two goals and an assist, Nikki Baldasti a goal and three assists; Lesley Couperwaite a goal and two assists; Teresa Bugden and Melissa Tone each a goal and an assist; and Ga-ie Trully a goal.
