Over the year ada have changed slighty to reflect the Urnes, but for the moet part ail of our modern automotive advertising can trace its moots back to a place somewhere west of Laramie. In the early part of the century car advertiaementa were prett~y basic - and pretty boring. Mostly they consisted of a amail black- and-white drawing of the car, accompanied by a huge amount of text which explaîned the car'a featuros and price. Ail of that changed i 1923 when Ned Nordan, an advertising manager turned automaker, aat down to write an a.d that would »eIl bis cars. The car was the Jordan Playboy, a pretty and well-made but otherwiae ordinary roadater. The company wus out of business by 1931 but because of its advertisement, the Playboy will neyer b. forgotten. Jordan broke ail the rules. Instea.d of a detailed drawing, the ad featured a painting i which the car played a very minor part; a beautiful woman and the horsea in the background were the locus. There was absolutely no information on the car at aIl. The text read, "Somewhere west of Laramie, thore'. a bronco-busting, ateer-roping girl who knowa what 17m tlking about.: She waa, the ad continued, "the hms who rides, lean and rangy, into the red horizon of a Wyomiing twilight." The ad concluded that the Playboy was buuît for her. Ail of Ned Jordan'a advertiaing was done this way, drawing the reader into a romantie aetting where a Jordan would be the only logical car te have. It worked on the public, who flocked to buy the cars, and it set Madison Avenue on its ear. Automotive advertiaing would neyer look the same again. Other companies hurried te catch up, alt.hough none ever quite matched the purple prose that flowed from Jordan's pen. At a trne when horaes were atili used for transportation, advertisers sihowed cars as an essential part of the wealthy socal scene. Stylized, art-deco drawings pictured men in tuxedos and women in fura uaing their car for a night on the tewn. In the late 1930s and 19409, people wanted their cars big. Advertiaers, who still used drawings, cashed in on this by exaggerating the proportions of the vehicle. Cars were drawn with. much longer hoode and wider stances tian the real thing, often te the point of ridiculousnesa. Following the war, advertising atressed how rnuch cars had irnproved through "war technology," and often apologized for the long delaya in délivery caused by wartime shortages of metal and rubber. For a short trne, advertisements were back te basica, but not for long. The 1950s arrived and with it, a period of prosperity the likea of which North America had neyer aeen. Theordanastyle was back in al its glory. Along with drawinga, printed ads now often featured photagrapha, and some, eapecially Cadillac, used both. A photo of mother and daughter in their mansion would appear at the top, with a drawing of the car - ita length stil exaggerated - at the SEE PAGE 13 Do you hear a chirping or screeching sound when you turn on your car heater? You're likely to, notice aUlne.w in the panel control lever. * the heater core, a miniature radiater which, like its higger brother at the front of the engine, eventuaily may seep or leak. When they're leaing, you'll lose heating/defrosting efficiency. * heater hoses are the amaller hioses in the cooling system that direct the hot coolant from the engin. totthe heater core. A leaking heater hose goes beyond simple discomfort and can ultimately leave you stranded on the side of the road. Because of the safety aspects of driving comfort and clear vision, the heating/defrost system is a vitally important part of the vebicle, emphasizes Car Car.
