Mixed liouseliold papers nclude computer paper, envelopes, writing paper, maga2ines, catalogues, paperback books, junk mail,. coupons and brochures - placed loose ini the blue box with- newspapers (no cùrbon or wax paper).. .Boiboard includes* shoe, tootlipaste, laundry detergent, cereal and tissue boxes. and sinillar product packaging, «as well as paper towel and toilet roll tubes. In order to keep the programn running eificiently, residents sliould include only dlean fibre. Paper sliould not be contaminated by food or other inaterials such as plastic handjes, liners or wax tissues. Contaminants interfere with the recycling process and lower the market value of the recyclable materiial. Durham's current program boasts of an overaîl contamination' rate of less than 0.5 per cent - an excellent rate on the collection of approximately 20,000 tonnes of recyclables per year. The Region of Durham works department is once again seeking candidates for an awards prsentation honouring significant contributions ini the field of waste reduction. Since 1990, the Region lias presented il awards of merit to deserving organizations. Last year's recipients were Dupant of Canada, Whitby Mental Health Centre and PPG Canada. Awards will be presented at Durliam Region's third, annulal industrial, commercal and institutional waste reduction seminar on Nov. 15 in Oshawa. Award recipienta will be selected from two categories: businesse whicli have demonstrated leadership in reducing their waste; an individual whose liard work and perserverance lias had 'a measurable impact in the workplace or comrnunity.
