"WVith school starting, we're hoping te control the spread by alerting parents," says Marion Megeei, supervisor of public health nursing, in an Oct. 2 statement. A very contagious -infection, whooping cough starts like a cold, but the cough laste a long tirne. The, cough is oftén followed by vomiting,- gagging or breath- holding (apnea). Canada Trust scholarshîps Canada Trust wiil present 20 students across Canada with scholarships as awards for outstanding commnunity leadership. Under the new program, the first scholarships will be awarded te students finishing high school in the current acadernic year, with Oct. '31 as the deadline for applications. The scholarships include payrnent of tuition for up te four years at coilege or university, $3,500 each year to cover living expenses, a.nd guaranteed summer jobs at Canada Trust. We're settling down here at Austin and now w. know what we're in for.. OACs have"ail been visited by our guidance department, and are preparing for their high sehool departure. Seniors are working hard at keeping those marks up, while juniors are stiil adjusting and learning what Austin's al about.1 But Austin students know how te, deal with-the pressure; they're getting involved in fantastic events such as the trip last Wednesday to Toronto te see Tommy. The stunning special effects of the show certainly met our expectations. Austillites are also helping other students with programs such as peer meciation. Training for peer counsellors took place earlier this week. We intend to continue the great success of lasi; year. .Student council is keeping us al busy as weil. Tis week begins our Mega Milk contest sponsored by the MiJk Marketing Board. Austin students wiil attempt to drink as much milk as possible, winrn«ng 'udderly' great prizes, »and keeping in mmnd that "rnilk does a body good." Our ultimate goal is te win the Mega Milk Dance Party. Go for it, Austin[. Graduation ceremonies take place tommorow might, starting at 7 p.m. We will be bidcing farewel to our grads who are- returning from vanious colleges and universities for a final reumion. To most, the ldea of going door-to-door selllng chocolate-oevered almonds is quite juvenile, not to, mention time-7 consurning, frustrating and annoying. However, it i s for a good cause. With yearbook sales just winding down, and.,the recent completion of the sodding of our new sports fields," we are ail gearing up for another month of activities and events. On Oct.- 10, students frorn the English and drama programs will see MacBeth in Stratford. We are sure that everyone will thoroughly enjoy the experience. Your first report card of the year will be going home Monday, Oct. 16, and parents' interview day will follow Oct. 19, so we hope everyone wil be on their, best behaviour for the next few weeks. Later this month, we also have United Way Week.- During the week of Oct. 23,. students will be given many different opportunities to make donations to the United Way. This is à very worthy cause that benefits our commuznities, go let's dig deep into our pockets and make this camjpaign a huge success. During the tail end of United Way Week, Henry will hold the second dance of the year, the Halloween dance on Oct. 26. ickets should be on sale later in the month, and we look forward te, seeing everyone dressed. In their Halloween finery. On Friday, Oct. 27, Henry Street wiil hold commencement ceremonies and awards presentations. Preparations are already being made, and it looks as if this year's ceremomies will b. the best ever. So there you have it.
