Six Nations I, defeated by Whitby 14-1 earlier in the tournament, turned- the tables big-time in the final as they cruised to a 10-1 win over an exhausted Whitby squad. Whitby had opened the tournament with an 11-3 win over Six Nations Il as Marcus Carrol and Alex Tilaart each scored four goals, Andy Wreggitt two* and Mark Jeffery one. Brandon Johnston was spectacular in net. ihlaart scored nine goals in Whitby's first enicounter with Six Nations I, Carroll and Douglas Langlois each scored two and Jeffeiy theo'ther. Warriors then defeated Whitby Green Gaels 9-4 with Jeffery coming up big in net. Carroll had three goals, Wreggitt two, with singles by Illaart, Johnston, Joshua Grey and Daniel Pogmore. Wreggitt and Jeffery each had three goals, Illaart and Carrol two each in an 11-9 win over Hamilton. Cameron Holding had the other goal, Tony Sillas was sohid in net. Pogmore had Whitby's only goal in the final - it was Whitby's second lose of the entire season. After the loss to Kingston, Whitby got great pitching from Jennifer Woodcock and Heather Seamone in wins of 12-5 over Kanata, 18-1 over Stittsville, 9-5 over Pittsburgh and 4-1 over Belleville. Tracy Miller ismacked three home runs, a double and six singles and drove in 14 runs. Jillian Finley had eight singles and a double, Amanda Simcoe a home run and five singles, Mandy Marshall six singles. Other team members are Leanne Stormns, Kelly Shelemba, Holly Broome, Monica Carcich, Gail Bradlley, coaches Bill Storms, Ron FInley and Mike Waller. Darren Forbes of Whitby won two gold medals at the provincial Special Olympica held in Windsor Aug. 10-13. Forbes, competing in the age 25 division, won the high jump and long jump. He alIso won silver medais in 100-metre and 200- metre and shot put, and was a member of the 'four-by-100 relay team that won bronze. Athletes from 12. regions in Ontario competed. Forbes helped region 12 (Durham Region, Belleville, Trenton, Peterborough) win the moat Medals. Durham Dodgers won the gold medal ini the B division in softball. Croucher 4th Jennette Croucher of Whitby was fourth in the 5,000-metre racewalk at the Canadian juni*or championships in Abbotsford,. B.C. recently. Croucher, a member of the Oshawa Legion Track and Field Club, completed the distance in 33 minutes. Game two saw Whitby edge archrival Pickering 4-3, with both sides rendering sparkling defensive plays. With WVhitby ahead in the bottom of the seventh, Pickering had the bases loaded, nobody out and a run aiready in. Derek Junkin struck out the next two batters. With two out, a Pickering batter lifted a fiy bail into the alley in right oentrefield where Jeif Freeman made a game-ending catch. Winning pitcher Kyle Branson went four shutout innings. Whitby then suffered its only loss of the chanipionships, 3-1 to Ajax. Whitby then again defeated Pickering, 10-3. Kevin, Wallace banged out four hits and aiso miade some fine defensive piays in the field. With the win Whitby moved on to the championship final, needing to beat the second-place Spartans of Ajax twice to take the crown. Chiefs took an eariy lead, oniy to have Ajax forge ahead. But the never-say-die team of 10-year oids produoed a six-run third inning to take a 7-4 lead. It stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth when Ajax was able to push two more runs across the plate. With a runner on third and one out, third baseman Junkin made an unassisted double play to end the inning. Whitby scored an insuranoe run in the top of the seventh, which they would need as Ajax was able- to count one more. With one out and a runner on third, Sean Cunningham made a catch in right centre, turned and Majors edge Cobourg The Whitby major mosquitos are the 1995 Eastern Ontario Basebal Association champions. Chiefs, sponsored by Tri-Bow Interiors Ine., earned the title in a round-robin tournament in Grafton over the Civic holiday weekend. Wihitby foliowed up their regular season first-plaoe finish (22-1-1) by going undefeated in five games. Pitchers Brett Backman,- Tyler McLellan, Brandon Petch, Matt Tosoni and Michael Wynistorf allowed just seven runs, four of them earned, in 35 innings. They had strong support from the defence, especially from catchers Craig McLelian and Adam Bright who were cutting down would-be basestealers al weekend. The first game was a 3-2 win over Peterborough that saw Bright get a pinch bit single and score on a ingle by Michael May to win the game in the bottom of the seventh. Chiefs then defeated Ajax 4-1 wi*th two-hit pitching from Tosoni and Backman. The score was tied at 1-1 until the fourth when Backman drove in Robert Eberie from third with the winning mun. Pickering was mowed down 7-1 as WVhitby cashed in four runs in a big fourth inning. Backman and Adam Sylvestre each had two hits. The next te faîl was Kingston Township by a 9-2 margin. Justin Hawe drove in a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. The championship game saw Cobourg strike in the first inning for one run and heid until the third when Backman singied and May doubled to drive him in. Chiefs took the lead in the fourth when Péeh singled and scored on Backans second hit of the game. Tosoni also had two singles. Petch took the mound in the second and heid Cobourg off the board until the fifth when Tosoni came on to sait the victôry. threw a perfect strilce to home to hold the runner. Freeman made a fine *defensive play- to end the game at 8-7, forcing Ajax into a one-game showdown. Whitby eked out a 2-0 lead in the second inning, and Branson pitchedthree innings of no-hit bal before Greg Williams came in. Ajax was able to score a run in the sixth, but a fine defensive play by Mike Melissis and two base- stealers caught at third quelled the uprising. Whitby brought in their closer, Junkin, for the last inning and he induced the leadof batter to ground out to short. With a runner on second, Chris Bowler made a dramatic knock- down of aùbard hit ground bail and fired to first for the second out. Junlcin then struck out the next batter.
