John Southern had been char- ged with assaulting a police offi- cer and weapons dangerous. In January, police detectives were investigatingl a fraud at an Oshawa donut shop and began questioning Southern. Police said he became abusive and was arrested. When taken to 17 division in Oshawa for ques- tioning, police say he attempted to assault one o f th e officers. The charges were then laid. Southern had filed a formai complaint, With the Professional Standards Branch, against one of the arresting officers. That com- plaint was being investigated.
