Kowali Whitby motorists will have to contend with dotours and evon more congested downtown stroots beginningnext year. Town council ast week rejc ted building a makeshift road- wvay te accommoate traffle dur- mai construction of the long-awai- ted Gardon Street railway bridge. Instead, vehicles will be rercu- ted to Anderson and Brock streets for the 18 months it takes te complote the project. Council felt that opting te toem- porarily inconvenience drivers would be an easier seil than spending $337,400 on something with only an 18-month lifospan. "If's a waste of money," coun- cillor Dennis Fox bluntly declared. '«There are other things needed in this town than a temporary road which would only annoy drivers," ho said.- Although ho had no diflîiculty winning support for his motion against building the roadway Fxwsput inte the unusual position of asking council te, dlefeat a recommendation hoe would normally have presented for approval. .Ozy one week earlier the operations committee (whicl Fox chairs) lhad recommended hold- ing a public workshop on tho mattor. However, organizing a meeting and thon assessmng whatever commente were made could delay construction for un te four months, Fox explained. Sinco only five people attended an information session last Octo- ber, another workshop was un- necessary, ho said. uAtho h welI intended, I ask that it recommendation) be voted down and we deal with it tenightn said Fox. "In thoi long run it will be a monoy-saver and a time-saver.» Scheduled te start next spring, the $6.9-million grade separation will be funded _by the federal, provincial and municipal govern- mente. Work will include a bridge and roadway underpass at the Cana- dian Pacifie rialway trucks, as well as reconstruction of Gardon Street from Martinet Street and Kilberry Drive te, Dundas Street. But before work could got underway, council had te decide if it wanted te, reroute traffic elsewhere -or build a temporary detour on Gardon te, bypass the Doistra pleads guilty, ROTAYCS construction site. Public works staff wero direc- ted te report on problems that could arise if a roadway, is not built and traffic simply rerouted away from the area. Accsosibility te noarby homes for fire and other emergency vehicles, as well as pedestrian safety were among the issues examined by staff. In their report, staff stato that neither the police nor ambulance service feel that closing Gardon Street will cause major problems. As for the fire departinent the report states that there wiI be some dolay te trucks responding from the Brock Street station but no- effeet on those from the Thickson Road fire hall.
