It cmn if your name. is Bill Coakey and you are teaching electrical safet~y to Whithby' schoolchildren. This fiowing pickle was just one of the props used by the Whitbhy Hydro safety trainer to keep bis young audience attentive wule ho taught his life-saving lessons. Recently, the Whitby Hydro Electric Commission imitiated an electrical safety program in Whitby's lementary schools. Asa test, St. Paul, Meadowcrest, St. Marguerite D'Youville, E.A- Fairman, St. John the Evangelist, and F.M. Heard were randomly selected te gauge the impact and efectveness cf '-he safety presentations. Coakley, an electrical safety specialist and trainer for many years, developed the presentations that were geared te three different age groups from kindergarten to Grade 8. Evaluations were reuested from the teachers, whileWhtby Hydro staff and, commimnr Ralph Blank, John Hughes and Bll Lawler also attended te measure the success of the program. Comments such as "energetic,"# 'bighbly effective" and I even learned tbings" attested te Coakley's outstanding presen- tations. The value of the program was hMghlghted by vice-princil Mitch LePage who wrote: "Our thanici, for irecognizing the importance of keeping c 'Idrn safe and for this initiative of the commission in meeting that objective." With that ind of feedbaek, it was easy for hydro commisson te recently approve plaýns to extend the program to ail of Whitby's elementary schools. Anyone who watches CBC - Peterborough wil be familiar with the CHEX Power Peak contest that recently concluded. This contest, a co-operative venture with CHEX-TV and 14 local utilities, was aimed at increasing public awareness-of the effects of power peaks. In easy-to-understand film clips, consumers were shown that the cost of producing eltIýcal energy varies with the time of day. As the demand for electricity mncreass Ontario Hydro lias te respod with' more cStly forms of generation. The - contest encouraged the consumer te use less electricity during the peak period in the evenmng. One of our customers quite correctly pointed out that this contest was being aired on televiion at the exact tixne we were asking people te turn off electrical appliances. It's a fair comment, and it also goes a long way towards showixig us how bard itis going tobe to lower power pEL The effectiveness of this voluntai programin 18still being investigated by the participating utilities. Other, more proactive initiatives such as "tixne of use" -rates continue to bo studied b~y Wbithb Hydro staff.
