A former hotel in 1860 an later ie location site for one of Durham's firat recycin de ots, The. Green Hous. now serves as an antique shop and offers the conirunity a variety of environmental information. This historic building, open during regular business hours and weekends, was restored b Jack McGinnis of Recycling Developnient Corporation to help local residents create .a workable 'Conserver Society?' Organi*c recycigi padrnning on campus. On Dec. 1, Mike Farley of Scarborough College. delivered an excellent p resentation on compsting at university, indicating what has een accomplished on campus to encourage composting. H. said il three-bin units were instaj.led in convenient locations at the canmpus two years ago, but due to lack of time and working knowledge, the systeni did not reach its ptential. With Farley's Enviromnental Youth Corp.,fundfing or waste managemient, students are being instructed te save itchen organle waste in a pail then, deposit these food. scraps into the first enclosure of the large three-bin unit. In the far side of the bin, students find a collection of dry leaves to add te, their food waste. Kitchen organics provide the nitrogen and the dry leaves, the carbon. It is necessary to layer these two material types in'order te achieve quality compost. The middle bin holds a supply of the finished compost which is later added te the campus s fiower beds and gardens. Farley explained: "As new students are always moving in, it takes a lot of ongoing education te get eve ron. not only te, save organic waste o6r a few days, but alot epsit it in a special area. But once they are hooked on the concept, "they love to compost and see the finished product." Every month community composting ideas are shared in Toronto's Metro Hall at 55 John St. COMING EVENTS: Feb. 8, 7 p.m., at Ralph Thornton Centre, 765 Queen St. E., Toronto.
