National Bank collection to be shown A selection of works of art from the collection- of the National Bank of Canada will be on view at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery fromn Jan; 5 until March 5. The exhibition includes works by artists Fritz Brandtner, Kitty Bruneau, Maurice Cullen, Marc Aurele Fortin, Betty Goodwin, Gershon Iskowitz, Jean-Paul Lemieux, David Moore, Alfred Pellan, Jean-Paul Riopelle and Irene Whittome. Through its acquisitions, the Bank strives each year to bring together the works of leading artists te illustrate the history of artistic'expression in Quebec and other parts of Canada. With its roughly 4,000-original works, the National Bank is considered te have one of the country's largest corporate art collections. While the collection consista prixnarily of prints, paintings and drawings, it also contains a nuxnber of sculpture, intograted works and some photographs. The works date back to 1895 in the case of 'Murray BaY,' a painting by Joseph Franchere, and span the entire twentieth century. They also illustrate the upheaval created by the Automatistes, the strict forma]ity of the Plasticiens as well as the lyrical abstraction of their successors. The National Bank bas long been an active collector of art and the tradition was reinforced in 1971 when the Provincial Bank of Canqda, one of its3 founding banks, began assembling a collection of prints. Over the years, it bas built up an impressive collection of works by Quebec and other Canadian artista that reflect the practices and pursuits which most influenced the country's art scene during the twentieth century.
