Whitby Free Press, Wednesday, December 7,1994, Page 23 VOLLEYBALL Anderson aims high Anderson CVI's senior girls' voileyball team is aiming for the top this year -- in Ontario. "We should definitely be in the top four or five in the province," sayscoach Gord Wiliamson. "This is the best balanced team I've ever had here.» Anderson has been strong in recent years, but always came up short against Mayfield of Bramp- ton, last year's Ontario Fede- ration of Schools Athletic Asso- ciation (OFSAA) champions. Mayfield has lost their star player who provided the winning edge, with the result that Ander- son wil be among about five teams contending for the Ontario crown. Williamson believes Waterloo Collegiate will be the team to beat. Anderson and Waterloo will compete in a tournament Jan. 6 in Ottawa. In the meantime, Anderson will stage its own annual tourna- ment this coming weekend, and begin league play Dec. 21. Williamson says the Durham league will also provide formid- able opposition, as Henry Street High School and a few other teams should be strong. Anderson will be led by Cheryl MacKay, in her fourth year on the team, and Shannon Jones, who was invited to try out for the provincial team. Top teams tie Whitby McDonald's minor novice AAA hockey team continued their battle for top spot in the Eastern AAA league. Whitby is currently tied in points with Ajax-Pickering Raiders and the two teams tied on Friday in Brooklin. The first period was all Raiders as they outshot Whitby by a wide margin and took a one-goal lead into the second. Goalie Kyle Clancy kept Whitby in the game with several key saves. Ajax-Pickering scored again early in the second to take a 2-0 lead but a power-play goal by Whitby captain Liam Reddox on a crisp feed by Nicolas Cotter brought Whitby within one and the momentum of the game shifted to Wildcats. In the last minute of play, Wildcats pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and hemmed Raiders in their own zone. With 28 seconds remaining, Michael McKenzie evened the score at 2-2 on a wraparound. At home to Markham Thunder on Sunday, Brandon Davis sparked the Wildcats' offence to a 9-3 win. Davis with three goals, two assists and linemates Andre Lar-amy (a goal, three assists) and Hobby Scott (a goal) accounted for five of the Whitby goals. Reddox with two goals and an assist, McKenzie and Seedhouse completed the scoring. Netminder Michael Leahy made 20 saves and came up big in the third period, foiling Markchamn's comeback attempt. Photo by Mark Reesor, Whitby Free Press Brooklin Redmen of the Ontario Lacrosse Association's major series will play all their 1995 regular season and playoff games at Iroquois Park in Whitby. The Redmen organization and the Town of Whitby had been discussing the possibility of moving to Iroquois Park since the end of the 1994 season. However, a number of obstacles had to be overcome before the agreement was finalized on Dec. 1. Included in the discussions were floor time considerations for established Iroquois Park "tenants," including the Whitby Warriors junior A club and a host of Whitby minor lacrosse teams at both the house league and rep levels. "This move by the Redmen could not have been accomplished were it not for the co-operation and support of the Town of Whitby and all levels of the Whitby Minor Lacrosse Association," states Redmen president Paul Cotton. "I believe that this will benefit all parties involved and generally add to the rapidly increasing interest for all levels of lacrosse in Durham Region. "The decision to move our home base from the Luther Vipond arena in Brooklin was difficult because of the outstanding tradition associated with it. "However, the club had little choice fron an economic viewpoint. The attendance success that the club has experienced when playing selected regular season and playoff games in recent years at Iroquois, made tremendous economic sense to move there on a full-time basis." The larger seating capacity at Iroquois will allow Redmen to increase efforts in the area of promotions, in an attempt to reach their average attendance goal of 1,000 people per game. Vice-president Barry Johnson says "Work is currently underway to provide Redmen fans with some type of 'special event night' at every 1995 regular season home games." Work is already underway to prepare for the start of the season in May, with a special holiday season fundraising project now being held. Redmen, with the support of the Brooklin and Pringle Creek IGA food stores, are raffling off 10 turkeys for Christmas. ickets are $2 each, or three for $5, and are available from members of the executive. Redmen are donating a portion of the ticket sales to the Whitby Arena Fundraising Association (WAFA), the group of arena users raising money for construction of a new arena in Whitby.
