Their first opponents, Toronto MTHL Red Wings, always a top- contender, started fast, scoring two goals in the first four minutes of play and went on to a 6-0 win. in gaine two versus Halton, Wildcats dominated the first two periods of play, outscoring their opponents 3-O. Goal-scorers were Jainie Fox, Brandon McBride and Ronnie Robertson. In the third period, Marc Glecson's shutout bid was broken when Halton scored with time running out. In gaine three against Detroit Little Caesars, Wildcats had to win ta advance. It was even-up hockey until Whitby opened the scoring with five minutés left in the first period. Then the floodgates opened. Wide. By the turne the dust settled at the end of the first, Wildcats hnd pounded five pucks past the Detroit goaltender. Point-getters in the barrage were Sean Pitcher, Ryan Tutak, James Liske, Andrew Pigrain, Sean Hill, Tyler Harrison, McBride, Robertson, Fox and Kosiw. As ia the previous gaine, the Wildcats then played some very sound defensive hockey for the remainder of the gaine. Led by Jef Seedhouse, Patrick Lang and Paul Ranger, Whidtby gave Detroit a lesson la teain defence, eamning a shutout with goaltender KMye Nova in the process. Wnde Branch scored twice in the final two frames in the 7-0 victory. The semi-final gaine saw Wildcats face London Rebels. The first period was fast-paced and close checking with no one able tg score the first goal. Early ia the second, McBride fired a high hard one into the London net. The lead didn't lnst very long as Rebels came bnck hard ta tie the score l'ive minutes later. London scored two more within a minuta and took a 3-1 lead into the third period. London scored again midway through the third and appeared to be cruising ta a 4-1 victory. But with five minutas left te play, Tutak scored on a pretty backhand. Then Kosiw tapped in a perfect pass froin Harrison -with less than a minute to play. Wildcats buzzed the net, just failing ta, get the equalizer with one second on the dlock. Bantams edge( The Whltby ininor bantaîn AA hockey teain, sponsored by Foran DisposaI Corporation, missed a berth in the Whitby silver stick tournament semi-fnals by a goal in two of the round-robin gaines. On opening night, Whidtby bast 3-2 ta league opponent Aurora. A see-saw battle in the first period ended tied 2-2. A highlight was Whitby goalie Scott Thonmpson~s 25-foot poke check on an Aurora attack. Wildcats scored on the retura rush. Aurora scored the eventual gaine winner in the second period, and Wihitby could not generata any offence in the third period, serving four minor penalities. Scoring for Whitby were Tim Fennessey and Bob Schlitt, with assists going te Derek Ackford, Paul Heinrich, Ryan Babcock and Mike Orviss. Ackford also' collected the gaine most valuable player award. Thompson turned away 27 shorts. Game two on Friday morning saw Whitby lose 4-3 to Hillcrest Summnits. I-llcrest started off quickly with two goals. Heinrich replied with a blast froin the top of the circle. Fennessey scored Inte in the second to tie the gaine, but Hilicreat replied with one second left as Whitby failed ta clear the puck froin the defensive zone. Hillcrest scored an insurance marker midway through the third, and Heinrich scored his second goal with four seconds left in the gante. Between the pipes, Sean Tremaine stapped 19 shots. Whitby gaine MVP was Flaherty. out Whitby moved on ta defeat winless Agincourt 6-3. The gaine proved to be a see-saw battie with Whitby's 2-0 lead evaporating in a barrage of third period penalties. Agincourt tied the gaine 2-2, but Flaherty came up big with an unassisted goal with Whitby serving two penalties. Flaherty had three goals for the gaine, Babcock the other two. Flaherty garnered the game MVP award. Flaherty was named minor bantarn AA tournament MVP after the Aurora-IIest--#, charnpionship gaine on Sunday.
