"This petition expresses very clearly the feeling of many people in Whitby as shown by the incredible number that took the time te sign it,'said White. Maria Dettacolli, a grandmnother, first started a petition last spring. « Save Our General Hospital' was then organized and collected thousands of additional signatures, net only in Whitby but ail across Durham. Many committee members were on hand in the Membersd Gallery as the petitions were presented te the leglislature. .The wording of some of the petitions met the Speaker's exacting standards as White got residents' concerns on the legislative record. White then gave the balance of the petitions te Ruth Crier, Minister of Health. Grier welcomýed the petition, said White. Crier had met with hospital board members and volunteers at the end of June. "She bas. been briefed upon our local concerns," said White. 'Unfortunately, she has net yet received the recomniendations from the Durhiam District Health Council. Thus, she cannot comment upon the recommendations that they have yet te, make. "Her ministry will carefully study their advice te ensure that the people in Durhiam receive the quality health care they deserve."
