Although the veteran politician confirrned elier this year that he would run for. re-election, Edwards officially announced bis candidacy last week for the posi- tion he bas held since 1991. First elected te Whitby council ini 1964, Edwards defeated for- mer counillors Gerry Emm and Lynda Buffett in t he mayoral race of three years ago. In a press release announcing bis re-election bid Edwards said his "major intentd as mayor was te increase job opportunities in Whitby. "Despite the recession and the downsizing of anumber of local plants, we have been able te provide a modest increase in job opportunitios'for our residents,» be stated. Part of this «achieveément» was accomplished by an "agessive marketing strateg»emploedb the Town, Edwards claime. «If re-elected, I will maintain this drive ,te enhance the =cnm of Whitby by S'upporting exsigbusinesses and yseek- ing an infusion of new industries and -jbproducing agencies from ontsjde our community,» he pro- mised. During the past three years, council, with tJhe financial assis- tance of other levels of govern- ment, lbas been able te bring several long-awatied projects te fruition, Edwards said. These projects include sanitary sewer and water services in Brooklin, a new fire hall on Taunton Road and expansion of the senior citizens' centre on Brock Street, ho noted. This was achieved at the same time that council was ablýe te freeze property taxes in 1993 and reduce taxes by 1.2 per cent this year, Edwards stressed.' Bow-man announces. bid for re-election By Mike Kowalsld Whitby trustee Patty Bowman will seec another torm on the Durham Board of Education. Board chair since last Deoem- ber, Bowman will ru for one of two Whitby seats on the public school board in the Novr. 14 imunicipal election. A 30-year-old design artist, Bowman was first elected to the board in 1985. In a press release announcing ber candidacy, Bowman stressed the importance of community in- volvement in the education pro- ceas. "'Community support to parents~ and teachers i8 key te inprovng the quality of life for our students,» said Bowman. "Our responsibility te young people does not end after the last school bell.» she said. With significant changes in Ontario's education system cern- ing sooni, «local solutions and solid local leadership is essen- tial,» Bowman said. While fellow trustee Tanya Gulliver will seek re-election, Whitby's- other truistee, Allan Gunn, bas not yet announoed bis PATTY BOWMAN election plans. If Gunn joins Bowman and Gulliver in the -race, it's guaranteed that at least one of the tbree will net ho back. In a cost-cutting move earlier this' year, trustees reduced their numbers by five. Whitby and Ajax will bave two trustees each instead ef three, while ýOshawa will drop from seven te five and Scugeg Town- ship from two te one. The'other municipalities are net affected.
