Whitby Free Press, Wednesday. August 24, 1994, Page.3 Daindas Street constructo Gasoline idenýtified as source Of contamination By Mike Kowalski 'Me source of contamination found in soil talcen from the Dundas Street construction pro- ject has been identified. Testing carried out last week on suspicious material uncovered by construction crews on Aug. 12 confirmed that gasoline was the source of the contamination, pro- ject manager Gary Carrol aid Tuesday. Town officiaIs are now await- ing permisio from the Ontario Minisr of Environment and Energv to begin hauling the snil away for disposai in the Brock West landfill site in Pickering, Carroll said. Carroll expected that the "50 to, 60 truckloads" of contamina- ted soul would be disposedl of by the end of thisweek. Until then, the soul, which is not considered dangerous, would be stockpiled on the street and covered by plastic tarpaulinis. Fears of' possible contamina- tion resulted in a two-and-a- half-day shutdown of the $1.3- million project before work resu- med last Wednesday. Suspicisons were aroused when discoloured soul was un- earthed in the vicinity of Hickory Street. Both the Ontario Ministry of Labour and environment minis- try were notified and tests were conducted to determine the source of the contamination. According to Carroll this type of contamination is Utypical.of what's found on a previous in- dustrial site, it'nothing extra- ordinary.» A service station once occupied the northeast corner of Hickory and Dundas streets, while other industrial-type uses were located in the vicinity, Carroll said. In an earlier interview, Whitby public works director Wayne Hancock stressed that the material is" not considered dangerous despite work being halted for safety reasons. uBecause there were certain safety measures involved we had te, bring in special equipment,» said Hancock. "TMe material was partially removed* and will be totally removed, but we have te coin- plete the tests to verify what it id '" he said. "We have people working in the area, it's not dangerous. "But with an y contamination we have te makçe sure and»0 through the safety procedures. Although soul testing is carried out prior te any construction project, there ie ne guarantee that foreign substances wilI be detected, Hanok said. uIt'a quite easy' te run into a pocket cf material that doesn't show up,» he said. Hancock did not expect the work stoppage te have an effect on the project's 16-week sche- dule. Delays due, to weather con- ditions are always factored into a job and this would be treated the same way, he said. The Dundas Street reconstruc- tion includes the replacement of existing storm and sanitary sewers and watermains from Brock Street to Hickory. Teproject is jointly funded 4y Whitby , Durham Region and the Canad/Ontro Infrastructure Works program. "'A-LI7TLE-EXT-HELP" Tutoring Service WE OFFER.
