Manigold, the, only undefeated team in the playofl's, faced Lennox Drum, ii the final. Marigold posted a 3-0 lend in the first inning-, but a tough Lennox teamn fougbt back in tbe last two innings, with tbe gaine ending 4-3 in Marigold's favour. After four gaines of regular season play, Marigold's record stood at two wins and two losses. At the conclusion of the regular season the teain was tied for flrst in their division of 14 teams, with a record of 14 wins, two losses and one tie. In the midseason teurnament, Marigold was the consolation champion. In tetal, the teamn flnished the season with an impressive 23 wins, three losses and a tie. ,Teamr members are Warren Barr, Justin Bird, David Burling, Jonathan Feeney, Andrew Gudgeon, Stephen Kalafatis, Colin Lalonde, Ryan Mattis, Justin Morrow, Kevin Peel, Chad mnosquttoes Seymour, Peter Stefanovic, Brent Stewart, Adamn Taylor and Chad Van Schagen, and coaches Jim Barr and John Gudgeon. Under*15s win Cup The WVhitby under-iS select soccer teani won the Durham Cup in UtMbridge recently. In the first game, Whitby took an early lead with a header from Shaun Deverili but Darlington fought back and tied the score just before half-timne. In the second half Whitby took control and won 6-2 with two goals from Francesco Princiotta and singles frorn Josh Smith, Marcus Payne and Joseph Hanna. In their second gaine, Whitby defeated Pickering 11-0. Mike Cross and Smith each scored three goals with singles from Hanna, Deverill, Payne, -Mark Dawson and Steve Race. Princiotta saved a penalty and shared the shutout with Brent Andrew. The third game was played against Ajax who took ful advantage of the wind and raced te an early two-goal Iead. Whitby tied the game with goals from Hanna and Princiotta. With Whitby pushing everybody forward for the winner, Ajax scored on a breakaway and won 3-2. In the final against Uxbridge, VWtby took control of the gamne with precise passing and Deverill, Payne and Smith won the game 5-2 te take their second teurnament win of the season. Other members of the team were Stephen Harrington, Adam Luin, Mark Bowman, Ryan Mattin, Aaron Price, Dave Busch and Alan Duncan. Selects in first place Whitby's #2 mosquito select basebali teai won three of four games in back-to-back doubleheaders over the weekend. In the. flrst two gaines the Deuces swept an improving Ajax squad 9-7 and 4-1. Bilan Donnelly picked up the win in relief of Bilan Mantle in the flrst match. Sean Newport was credited with bis third save of the season. In the second encounter, Mfike Laf'e.,hike Wynisterf and Ryan Matthlews scattered five bits'over seven innings en route te the win. Laffey grabbed the win and Matthews bis tbird save. On Sunday the teaxn travelled te Pickering for a divisional doubleheader. Whiitby lost 6-3 then won the second gaine 8-6. Scoring runs over the four gaines were Andrew Carter (tbree), Newport (two), Laffey (three), Brian Sand (two), Mantle (four), Matthews (five), Jared Pp (two), Wynisterf, Lucas Naylýor, Justin Potter, Donnelly and Justin Popp.0 Witby's regular season record now stands at 6-2 and they can wrap up flrst place in the central division with a win or tie in their remaining two games. Whitby advanced te the consolation finals in Barrie in recent tournament action but came. up short to Waterloo. Whitby entered the teurnament wtbout the services of seven regular players. Faced witb this player shortage, Witby's other three select coaches were contacted and a teain was put tegether at the last moment. In the flrst gaine, Whitby played a strong team froin Oakville and lost 11-1. Jason Connor was selected as Whitby's player of the game, allowing only one run over three innings on the mound. In the second encouniter, Whitby was pitted against host and teurnanient favourite, Barrie Red Sox. Whitby jumped out quickly and held a 4-0 lead inte the fourth inning. Barrie made it close with two runs in the bottoin half but Whitby unleashed the lumber and put seven runners across.the plate in the flfth te coast te a 12-3 final. Mantie was credited with the win on the mound. Naylor was awarded player of the gaine in a relief role. Coing inte the final match of the day, Witby needed only a tie against Ajax te, advance te the final round of play. Wbitby fel bebind 5-2 in the early going but tied it up with three runs in the tep of the fifth and held on for the tie. Andrew Lazary doubled in Carter and Popp, then WilIie Lazary singled home brother Andrew for the tying run. Once again Whitby was faced with a player crisis losing Deluca, Connor and Laba te regular season play Once again two players had te, be called at the last moment for Whitby te, field a teamn. Nathan Cotter and Mike Weir answered the late oeil te, enable Whitby te fleld a teain. In the semi-final, South Bramnpton battled back from. a 7-1 deficit te, force the gaine inte extra innings. South Brampton held Whitby scoreless in the top haîf of the eighth and then squeezed in the winning riun in the bottom of the frarne. The loss placed Whitby into the consolationi finals against a strong Waterloo teain. Whitby once again held a 6-3 lead midway through the gaine but could not hold on and were defeated. Weir and Cotter proved te be valuable additions as Weir allowed only one bit and one run over six innings of pitching. Cotter crushed a two-run triple and made some outstanding plays in centre field. Wh itby team reaches semis at imie event The Wbitby Im-Lie Stars went as far as the senii-finals in the national rollerblade champion- ships held at Agincourt Arena in Scarborough. The Stars, p ut tegether at the Iast minute by teain capans Matt Muir and Sbayne Christiensen, first played on Aug. 19 against National Gymn squad in the aged 18 and older division. Whitby surprised theinselves with a 10-8 victory. Goalscorers, were Matt Cardwell with four goals and two assists, Matt Muir witb four goals and one assist, and Kevin Thrasher with two goals. Whitby then defeated Toronto Thunder 11-6. Wbiùtby started off slow but was brought te life with a natural hat trick from Justin Cardwell. Other scorers were Matt Cardwell with three goals and four assists, Muir had three goals and two assista while Thrasher rounded out the scoring with three points. After game three, representatives froin Stars entered the Koho slapshot contest. Mntt Cardwell won the contest with a slapshot that registered 121 kilometres per hour and took home over $300 worth of prizes. Whitby then played a strong Bauer teain that had four professional players and had -?layed together for a few years. Coing into the tbird period Whitby had the lead. But Teain Bauer was just a littie too strong and teok the gaine 10-6. Scorers for Whitby were Matt Cardwell with four points, Muir with two goals, Justin Cardwell with two goals and Jainie Pawlik a goal. Stars advanced to the semi-finals against another older teain, XMen. Whitby could neyer get rolling and after Matt Cardwell got a goal called back, Whitby knew that they were not going te be able te mounit a comeback. Matt Cardwell with' 17 points and Matt Muir witb 13 points were nominated for tournament most valuable player. Other teani contributions came froin Chris Stone, Shayne Christiensen, Brodie Richards, Bryan Howden and Adamn Capson.
