It was on Wednesday last .week that. Redmen rolled to an easy 24-11 win over Chiefs in the oPenier of the best-of-seven series that should finally begin to heat up tonight. The second gaine that was to have beon played on Thursday night last week in Brantford s Civic Centre was cancelled because the wood surface laid over the ice at the arena was tee wet to play on. Now, no gaines will be played in Brantford. Instead, alI Six Nations home gaines will be played at the sinaller Six Ntions Momorial Centre arena. There will be no booster buses going froin Whitby te the Six Nations'ga es. The sertes had already been delayed te allow some players to participate in the Common- wealth Gaines where field lacrosse is a deinonstration sport. Third gaine in the series is on Friday night, Aug. 26 at Iroquois Park. After the gaine, aIl Red- mon players, including Gary Gait, who had seven goals and three assists in the first gaine, will be available for an auto- graph session on the arena floor. Shoppers Drug Mart, with coach Guy Connelly in hospital for surgery te remove'a tumour, rolled over Swiss Chalet 10-2 te capture the playoff champion- ship, their fifth straight win in the playoffs. Wthi Marcel Chaisson and Toin Sawyer coaching, players for Shoppers, first-place team, overal during the regular sea- son, came up with a superb effort. Shoppers pitchers hold their opposition hitless until the fourth inning. Meanwhile Kevin Connelly had threo bits and drove in two runs, Joey Morrow had two bits and two runs-bat- ted-mn. Swiss Chalet coaches said in the fourth inring they would play the game under protest, claiming Snhoppers wasn t play- ing by the rules. But the league executivo voted in faveur of Shoppers after the gaine. Coach Guy Connelly had asked if the gaine could ho postponed for a few days until ho was eut of hospital. But the gaine went ahead as scheduled as the Swiss Chalet coach would lose somo of his players (going on vacation) if the gaine was held this week. The Bs dofeated Brantford 10- 9 in their first gaine, nîanaging to hold off a determined Brant- ford teain that outscored Whitby 5-2 in the f»inal pe.io, Whitby then Ck advanta e of power plays te defeat Hamilton, a previously classified A teain, 15-6. Quick line changes helped Whitby overpower Peihain 18-7 and go on te the final against Scarby uâ 3-1 after one period and 6-3 after two periodas on their way to a 10-5 win. Wbitby scored two short-handed goals in the third period. CoryHRaas had 10 go ais and eight assists to lead the Whitby offenoe in the four gaines. Ryan Harris scored eight goals and added three assists, Mike Row- land had seven goals and five assists and Darry McArthur four goals and eight assists. Goals by Brandon McBride and Jimmy Muinford saw Whitby with a 2-1 lead at the end of the first. But despite anothor goal by McBride, Whitby was down 4-3 at the end of the second period. A strong third period by Peterborough endod the gaine with a 6-3 score. Whitby won five gaines te reach the final. They defeated Orangeville 6-3, Poterborough 7-6, Beaches 7-5 and Kfitchener 8-3. They defeated Beaches again in the semi-final, 11-5, te, reach the final match. The teani had won the field lacrosse provincials and the zone chaxnpionship. Whitby won the zone chaznpionship by defeating Toronte Beaches 8-3. Whitby's Jamie Barton led the way with throo goals. Singles were added by Tyler Harrison, Nathaniel Andres, Jeremi Brimble and Andrew Glen. Whitby lost only one gaine during the zone season te, reach the ffinal. Whitby fell behind 2-O to Beaches who had just returned from, l~e Ontario Summer Gaines in Ottawa where they lost 6-2 te Whitby's midgetA teain in the provincial play- downs. But Whitb gradualiy toolc control, and RyanrHarris led the attack with two goals and set up three of the other four-goals. Bs win 2 of 4 in finals Whitby Bs had two wins and two losses at the novice provincial lacrosse championsilips hosted by the Whitby Minor Lacrosse Association Aug. 19 te 21. For the Whitby teain, sponsored.by Gary Roberts and Je Nieuwendyk, the championships turned out te ho a reflection of their entire season: they gQt off te a good start but could not sustain that momentuin. In their first round gaine against Newtown, Whitby got off te a quick 4-2 lead, but trailed 7-6 with under sevon minutes te go in the gaine. Then Jarod Millar scored his third goal of the gaine te lde the score, and Mike Crystal scorod the game-winner with under two minutes te go. In second round play, Whitby got off te a uick start, leading 2-0 after oMy two minutes of play. Arthur then teok over and dominated, winning 16-6. Arthur went on te be a finalist for the provincial novice B titie, loeing in the championship gaine te Brampton. In third round play, Wihitby defeated Hamilton 7-4. Leading the way for Whitby were Crystal with four goals (including bis second gamne-winning goal of the teurnainent) and Millar with throo goals. Whitby's final gaine of the championship was against Peterorough II, a teain that they had played four turnes during the season, with each team winning two games. After a low-scoring first period, Peterborough went on te outplay Whitby, winning 11-3.
