- -w--- - - Whitby Free Proue, Wecfnesday, June 1, 1994, Page 7 r I Political talk Let's talk today of politicians. Some people say that politicians do not always tell the truth. Some dlaim that politicians even, ahem, manipulate "the truth." Ah, weil. Let's look at a case study: Bob Rae, Premier of Ontario. Now there's a case for you. Bob has just told us, through his media contact, that it is right and good for Ontarians ta seek business with China. Those huinan rights issues revolving around the Tiananmen Square mean nothing ta us. Right. In other words, if we don't do business with those nasty people, someone else will. Sa let's just go ahead and do it. What they do with their own people is their own business. It is mare important ta have jobs in Ontario. After aIl, you can't export principles. You may flot like Uncle Bob's approach an this issue. I don't, but would likely change my mind quickiy if I had to choose between my job and supporting hum an rights in China. Sa you gatta give Bob bis dues on this ane: no lying politician would give us a lin. like that. Ergo: if hie isn't lying then h.e must be telling us the truth. FERMER LE ROUCHÀARD And talking of politicians: Lucien Bouchard, at least I think that's the ane, has ta get a special award for adroit media manipulation in twa languages in two, er, is that three, cauntries. See, there's this trip ta France. Main purpase: ta get his picture and a few words in the media back home, especially in Quebec. You know, French links and ail. It's likeiy Quebecers really eat that up. But at that same time Lucien stirs up a few western premiers. He does this by trying ta, get everyone ta start negotiating naw, and h. means right now, for Quebec leaving Canada. The reaction is predictable. Negotiate? Heck, Lucien, up ta naw we've been nice., and 1 mean real nice ta Quebec. But do you for a -minute think that meek, mild-mannered Anglos will continue ta be nice as you separate? The federal debt, Quebec boundaries, the rights of First Nations-, al now become part of the discussion. Sa knock it off, Lucien. Strange thing is, 1 am told, Lucien knew ail about that reaction. In fact, counted on it. 11e knows by raising the volume over such topics, that the. western premiers will alienate Quebecers. Even federalist Quebecers. Maybe especially federali st Quebecers. Came the referendum, he will need every vote h. can manipulate. 1 wan't wish hum good luck. You will note that during the debate ail politicians, including Lucien, Alberta Premier Ralph Klein, and anybody did not lie. As with Bob Rae, this proves that politicians-do not always lie. AND JEAN SAYS... A furthermore: through ail that debate - was it only a few days ago? -- Prime Minister Jean Chretien also told some truth. H. said, and I quate: "We wone talk a bau' the constitutional like Presto Manning want. W. tirs' will deal with jobs, and then the. defecate." Or something like that. He alsa said, and I am just making this one up: "Canada is lack won 'uge triangle, and M. Bouchard, he be the hypoteneuse. That for shore." Came ta think of it, I made up that first quote, too.
