If strep throat is accompanied by a characteristic red kIdn eruption, thon it je called scarlet foyer. Strep throat is an infection caused by the bacteria group A hemolytic strep. Scarlet fever occurs noot frequently in the fal or winter, and in children botween ages five and twelvo. Howevor, it is net unheard cf for the occasional adult te, be infected. Children loe than one year old seldom contact it. The poriod of incubation is about throe days following contact with an infected person. Symptomes may vary from very mnild te acute and the body tomporature may rise as high as 104 dogroos F. 1The patient will alinost always complain of a very sore throat. A rash first appears in pinpoïnt spots ef bright red, usually on tho neck and chest areas,, and will gradually cover the reet cf the body. Toin day. te two weoks after the onset ef this disease, peeling of the sldn may begin on the foot and hands. Othor parts cf the body may also be affocted, such aste fingernails, teoth and hair. The cencern with scarlet fever is that in children over age five it is ometimes associated with a disease called rheumatic fever. Although rheumatic feyer is now uncommon, if left untreated it cari cause, a variety of complications including damage to the heart. If parents suspect that a child in the household has strep throat, or scarlet fever, thon a physician should be consulted. If a child's strep throat went undliagnosed and loft untreated by antibiotics, chances are good that the youngster will probably stli recovor within a short time. The good news is that 'in order to prevent rheumatic fever, aritibiotic treatnient -need fot bogin immediatély after symptoms of scarlet fever appear. Even if a woek or more passes after the child becomes iii, antibiotic troatmnent will stll bo of benefit. Ponicilin ie the classic choice among doctors although many othor drugs are just as effective. Since the advent of suipha drugs and penicillin, serious complications from scarlet foyer have bècome rare. Scarlet foyer is most contagious during the early days when symptoms first appear, and, remains contagious for a period of two to three weeks, or, until the patient has been treated with antibiotics for a minimum of 24 hours. The best way to avoid catching scarlet fevor is by thorough hand-washing and by being out of the Une of fire of an infected cough or sneeze. "One important thing to remomber is to soe your family doctor at the first sign cf severe sore throat, fever, . and when ewollen glands are feit," says Bullor. "Request a throat swab from your doctor, and, if possible, try to receivo modical attention beforo the rash appears. Hopefully scarlet foyer wiIl corne and go with very littie disconifort."
