The. suffering and distrees the recent event caused White and bis fvnily in now well-known. By a strange quirk of the law, the work and influence of botb parents and the lives of the children were severely disrupted. White's action te try te prevent the illegal purchase of cigarettes by his daughter is sometbing moot decent parents would also understand. M WIN hiaetary Rep~U ort Reducing government costs By Alex Shepherd Durham rldlng MP As it's the end of the fiscal eaI would like te discuss how vespent taxpayers' money running thbe offices in Oshawa and Ottawa. Reducing the cost Of gvrnent bas been one cf my ga. Between Oct. 26 and March 31, my operating budget is under the allotted amnount by $5,000, wbich works out te $12,000 annually if the govern- ment had been in power for the entire fiscal year. Not much, sorne might say, but it's your money returned te the Canadian treasury. rNe purchased five new conputersfo the offices at a tota cost of $16,800. 1Istilî have a $5,000 allowaiice for equipment purchases that I haven't used. We begin paying April 1. Next year, we won't have capital Mxpenses for computers ndreâ~ovations as they are one-time-only expenditures. Con- sequently, if equipment expen- ditures had hot occurred, our surplus -would have been $29,300 since last Octeber, or $70,000 for the fiscal year, that could have been returned te the treasury. Ini addition' I have saved taxpayers $250 per week by taking the train te and from Ottawa. Thie train is not only cbeap, but gives me time to write letters, and take care of other business, I fact, this column was written while travelling te, Ottawa on the train. Little of my time is wasted using the rails. Between my staff and 1, we have developed one of the most cost-effective and technologically-efficient offices cf any MP which we hope is serving the taxpayer well while saving tax dollars Since going to Ottawa, I haven't found out where the barbers or shoesbine people ply their trades. I use the gym occasionally, which costs $100 annually te use the facility. I use the infamous- parliamentary cafeteria froni time te tume. It's close te mny office, and the price cf a light lunch ie no different than one you could purchase anywhere in Durhami. Stili there ie the question as te .why the cafeteria runs a deficit. I think it's due te wages paid staff under civil service agreements, and not the price cf sandwiches. As I said, reducing the coet of governiment while deliverinig service remains the goal in Ottawa and here in the constituency. Every MIP has a contribution te make tewards that goal. I hope Nve demonstrated te you how I thinc. inm makcing a difference spending your monoy i you have any questions or need any assistance, call me at 721-7570 or in Uxcbridge at 1-800-565-4105.
