On Saturday in Bowmanville against the league-leaders, Whitby jumped te a strong start and created many scoing opportunities early but could n et get the puck in the net. Midway through the second period Bowmanville opened the scoing on a scramble. A few minutes later, the Rat Pack tied the score when Sean Pitcher scored on the rebound from, a Sean Kerr shot. Against Oshawa, Whitby boasted a 2-0 win behind the great goaltending of Joël Whitmarsh. Marksmen for Whitby were Bob Gawne and Matt Taylor assisted by Nathan Cotter and Tom Ricica. Wihitby tied Njax-Pickering Raders' 1-1 in a hard-feught battle, with the Raiders' tying goal coming late in the third period. Taylor scored the enly Whitby goal, unassisted, but great defensive play frein Ian Witruk, Josh Turcotte, the Raiders while The Rat Pack spent most of the third period defending their goal as Bowmanville got stronger as the gaine went on. Bowmanville took the lead midway in the third on yet another acramble. The Rat Pack came close with four shots in the last minute but could not get the. equà lizer, and the gaine ended 2-1 in favour of Bowmanville. Rat Pack garnt. stars were the goaltending duo of Drew Dockrill and Kyle Nova, and defenceman Sean Kerr. On Sunday the Rat Pack hosted the Marl<hain Thunder. Ryan Farrw challenged a swift offensive lune. Whitby then tied York-Simcoe 3-3, eutstancling in net was Julian Owen. Dan VonEschscholtz had a pair, with a single from Ryan Matthews. Short-handed in Madoc (Matthews, Gawne and Potter suspended, Andrew Greenen injured), a nine-inember Whitby team lest te Quinte 5-2. Cotter netted both goals, the first unassisted early in the first period, the latter assisted by Berkuyl and Kubrynski. The teain travels te Brantford te participate in the Wayne Gretzky tournament over the holidays. The tearas had split their first two meetings this year on identical 2-1 scores. The Whitby major novice AAA hockey team, sponsored by the Ladies Auiliary, won their weekend matches in cenvincing fashien beating Richmnond Hlili Stars 8-3 on Saturday and -econd-place Markham 6-3 on Markhsxn came right back to tie the score less than a minute later and the first period ended 1-1. Markham teok the lead midway through the third. Andrew Laniiot took the puck away at the Markhain blueline and fed it up to Branch. Markharnteek an early 1-0 Iead but Whitby countered with four straight goals by Tutak, Robertson, Thibedeau and Kosiw. The second period saw Whitby send seven men te the penalty box. However, strong penalty killing and positienal play resulted in Markham onîy scering once. McBride evened matters on a set-up by Sean Hill.' In t he third period Markhain scored on a penalty shot, and Paul Ranger rçplied for Whitby on a slapshot frbtn just inside the blueéline. Marc Gleeson and Chris Nemisz again provided stellar goaltending backed by the strong play of the defensive cere. defenders in the corner and placed a perfect pasa on to the stick of Brandon Fowler whoe shot left the goaltender no chance. With less than two minutes remaining -in the gaine, Markhani scored to win 3-2.
