Thrasher, who has won at several track and field meets as a sprinter in the CP5 (cerebral palsy) class, has always been xterested in cycling and recently began riding with aen Briar, a high school teacher in Ajax who is a long distance cyler. Thrasher purchasd a 12- speed bicycle froin Briard, and rode it te first place in the The Whitby Iro~quois Swim Club held an awards night Oct. 29. Sandy Goss, an Olympic medailist and Canadian record- holder, and Michael Gurgol North York Aquatic Club heaci coach, were guest speakers. Whitby club achievemients of the past season included:.. * Ashleigh Crowder as junior national champion in the 100- metre backstroke; five-kilometre race ini ciass 5 of the international cycling chain- pionships in Tampa, Fia. Thrasher was the only cydlist from Ontario at the competition Four other Canadians and the national tearn coach, ail froin British Columbia, were at the competition. Thrasher was third in both the 1.5- and three-kilometre races. * Ashleigh Crowder, Erik Van Dijk, Robin McCuloch, Sarah Le, Jacy LaBelle, Jennifer Crowder, Lindsay Crowder and relay teaxa as top Canadian-ranked swixn- mers in their age groups; * the Whitby club 22nd, up -O1 spots froni last year, in the top age group ranking. The Thursday game in Pickering was a tight-checking contest that was actually dloser than the final score would suggest. Wade Branch opened the scoring early in the second period with assiste going te Brandon Fowler and Robin Côté. Pickering tied the gaine a few minutes later on a scramble in front of the net. The turni*ng point in the gaine camne when a Pickering forward was sent in on clear breakaway but was stopped coid by goaltender Drew Dockrill. Shortly after, Branch picked up his second goal on a nice pass from Fowler and Whitby neyer looked back. Goals late in the third period by Sean Pitcher and Jason Connor iced the 4-1 Whitby victory. Assiste went te Justin Hawe and Jerenil Brimble. Gaine stars were Janiie Millage, Côté and Branch. On Sunday the teain travelled te Vaughan te face the teugh Rangers. Taking advantage of the largo ice surface, the 'Rat Pack' skated te, a wll.deserved 5-2 victory. Pitcher, with a natural hat trick, was namned the game's first star. Assists on the three goals went te Kevin Walsh, Michael Elnigan, Robert Eberie and Hawe who was aise named second star for great two-way play. Aise scoring for Whitby were Connor and Branch, with assists going te, Brimble, Brandon Fowler and Andrew Martland. Kyle Nova played yet another strong game between the pipes, earning himself third-star honours. The defensive corps is becoming very steady, giving up only 15 geais in eight league gantes. Assistant coach Gary Pitcher says "for the most part, the defencement are picking up their assignments very well." The Rat Packs record is now six wins and two basses.
