VVTYT~ Off and e le running in Ontario By Mike Kowaloid After monthe of waiting at the starting gate, federal election candidates in Ontario riding are off and runnig. None of the major political p arties were caughýt off guard by Pimne Minister Kinm Campbell s announcement last week that Canadians will go te the poils Oct. 25. Candidates for ail parties had been nominated and eIection pre- parations were well under way long before Campbell replaced Brian Mulroney as Progressive Conservative' leader and prime minister in June. In fact, candidates for both the Reform and Liberal parties have been out knocking on doors in the predominantly urban riding for more than a year now. Ontario riding, which takes in Pickering, Ajax and Whitby south oF Taunton Read, has approximately 117,300 e1iib1e voters based on the votera list from last year's referendum. A Tory stronghold since 1979, Ontario riding has been repre- sented by former Ajax municipal councillor Rene Soetens for the last five years. Soetens is being challenged by Liberal Dan McTefgue, New Democrat Lynn Jacklin, Don Sul- livan of the Reforni Party, and Robert McMenemy, candidat for the fledging National Party of Canada. WVhile they do not agree on much, ail five candidates believe that national issues, specifically the economy, will determine the outcome iii Ontario ridbng. Although there are some scat- tered local concerne such as future development on land expropriate for the defunct air- port in i nrtl 'Pickering, no one issue is uni jue te the riding, candidates luie. Soetens, a former sales mana- ger for Co-Steel Lasco in Whitby, said the economy -- interest rates, the deficit, unemployment», -- is the major concern of riding residents. «There's ne specific single suE PAGE 18 Thecandidateàs ONTARIO R[DING [*in cI- New Deocratic Party ~ietMcMeey- Nationa Party Dan weToaus l- La>"n Dm sumrn ~- Rariaruty DURHAM HIDING farry apa - NaU"na Party LocyRbka-Bocke NDP A=sh hd-Li lin amyh RCioParty Fa .M e«MMM -PrugruaivaCaavativa GRADE 9 students at Father Leo J.
