Fred bas written most of the lyrics and music to be performed by the -trio, and they plan te release a CD next spring. "It covers, a lot of years of writing," says Fred 44, of Whitby, who says he bas about 100 songs from which to choose for the CD, while Hickey, an Ajax resident, bas about 15 gui- tai- comnpositions te offer. Sidewalk art contest i*s 0one of new events 'Preserving our heritage for our children is the theme of this y earesHeritage Day on Saturday, ~ept. 11, 9a.ni. te 4 p.m., in tbe downtown area. The day's sigbts and activities, co-ordinated by the Whitby Downtown Business Improve- ment Aiea (BIA) and tbe Local Architectural Conservation Advi- sory Committee (LACAC),. will offer a glimpse into tbe everyday life of our ancestors. There will bo dmonstrations on the fine art of boney-making, rope-making, woodcarving, chair caning and stencilling. Local artists will spin yarn, rug book colourful mats, weave decorative baskets and prepare floral crafis. SIDEWALK ART COMPETITION In a new event this year, people of aIl ages -- individually, as a group or a family -- wîll bave the chance to paint the sidewalks downtewn. Judges for the competition will inspect art work in tbree age categories: 10 and under, il te 17, and over 18. There will be prizes in each categoil(.ail paints The BIA will provi e and water supplies, but partici- p ants must brin g their own brushes. APPLE PIE CONTEST The popular apple pie contest will again be held, and people of ail ages are welcome te enter their favourite recipe. The contest will be held at il a.m. at tbe Miracle Food Mart, 601 Dundas St. W. FACE PAINTING Anotber of the most popular events on Heritage Day is face painting, organized by the BIA and Big Sisters Newcastle-Osh- awa-Whitby. The County Town Singers wvill on hand te entertain, singing familiar tunes. Town arcbivist Bilan Winter will lead an educational walk througb downtown Wbitby, starting at il a.m. at the Bank of Mentreal at the four corners. The tour will end at the CIBO at~ the four corners, in time for tour participants te take part in a ceremonial cake-cutting at neon. This year's Heritage Day will also celebrate the 5th annivers- ary of the launching of Her Malesty's Canadian Ship Tracy Culleton, summer stu- dent for the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Commit- tee, helped organize events for Heritage Day and expects a good turnout -- particuarly if the weather is favourable. And some events will be held indoors. Members of the Whitby-Osh- awa brancb of the Ontario Genealogical Society will be at the Whitby Public ]Library bet- ween 1 and 4 p.m. for those nterested in exploring their own family histery.
