The study, sponsored by Duke University in the U.S., bas chosen a number of Canadien hoopiýtals as research facilities - Why General is one of them. "This is extremely relevant research," says McAlister. "Hopefully we can help patients who have suffered an initial heart attack flot te have another." McAlister will be looking for patients te participate in the program that involves a five-year study period. Some patients involved in the program wnIl be given sniall doses of Coumadin along with ASA, while others will'. receive a placebo. Ail patients, however, will be monitored by McAlster as te their progress and the effect of the treatment. 'We are being given the opportunity te, monitor five patients while Toronto General will mnonitor 10. Ini the scheme of things, it's very important research being conducted in Whi tby," says McAlister. Chief executive officer Elizabeth Barten of Whitby General Hospital is pleased about McAlister's participation in the research study. "Given the large number of cardiac patients that receive treatment at the hospital and the expertise of our physicians, it is appropriate that Whitby General is participating in the project. "The hospital's nedical advisory committee and board of directors are very supportive of the research and will follow its progress with great intereist," says Bai-ton.
