The teaanou to atone for their loss in the finals in Sarniaeto weeks ago, stsrted strong by defeating Six Nations 9-5 and following up witb wins over Windsor 9-2, Orillia 7-3 and Acton 9-2. The four wins guaranteed Whitby a spot in the cbampionship game in Arthur, that proved to bo a thriller. Acton made it to the finals and despito having to play two additional gaines on Sunday to get there, the Acton teain clearly came out to win. Whitby got on the scoreboard first but Acton quickly tied it and the game romained tied until midway tbrougb the second period. In the second Whitby scored twice to take a one-goal lead into the third period. In the third Whitby was able to extend their lead and in the end won 6-3 despito some closing pressure froin Acton. For Redmen, it was simply a case of «Wo wero getting better and better, they (Frgs weren't,» says Van SickleofRd men play in the latter haîf of the regular season, when Brooklin overteok Fergus te, finish second. And bie expects that teami u- pr ovement te show against rampton, which lest only one regular soason garne and defea- ted Brooklin four turnes. Van Sickle, in fact, feels bis team bas more depth than Brampton. Redmen added voterans Fred Upshaw and Steve Cashoîl before the rogular seasen ended, and Davo McWhirter will join the team, for the final senies. ýJunior teain call-ups such as Matt Shearer contributed un- monsoly. Van Sickle says Shearer may have surprised Fer- gus with his goalscoring in the firet twe games beforo hie was checked more closely, but that Shoarer adds a lot of speed te tbe Top «seorer Greg Van Sickle, who -missed part of the Fergus recovered and roady te play in the final. «We've got the experionce and w've got the sped,' says Kevin Van Siekle. "I think we'vo got the more wll-rounded team.» But hoernmphasizes that bis teain must stay out of the penalty box or at least, 'take a partner" to the box. Redmen' had the lead going into the thiÏd period in tbree «aines agÀinst Brampton during The regula'r season. But thir poriod penalties gave the lothai Brampton power play squad the opportunities te corne back and win those games. That power play features the lege's top tbreo scorers: Jim Veltinan, Troy Cerdingley and John Tavares. On, the powe plIay, they're almost unstoppable, v an Sickle admits. And wben at even strengtb, «We'll be respecting thein, espe- cially Veltman, and paying them attention." Ho feels the firet game will se both teains «lay their carda oni the table.» Changes will be made afLer that gaine and "We'll have tlbe deck ready» for the second gaine. Desyite the big scerers, lis feels 'Seme of tbe no-naines wil be responsible for the win or tii. loss" in the first gaine.
