Photo by Mark Reesor, Whitby Free Press Coping with arthritis The Arthrtis Society is offering a new prograin that shows people ways ta cope mentally, eniotionally and physically with their arthritis. Called the' Arthritis Self-Management Program, Pam VanEgmond, program co- ordinator says, 'it has been proven to help people reduoe their ain by as xuch as 25 per cent. Wehave had people tell us that they have regained a zest for living they haven't felt in years." In six, two-hour, weely classes participants, who may have any type of arthritis, are given information and learn coping sIlls that begin while they are in the prograni. Taking control helps move them towards an improved quality of life and reinforces their sense of seif-esteern and dignxty. The prograni, created by Kate Lonig of Stanford University, covers pain management, the importance of exercise, nutrition, dealing with depression, problem-solving and coping strategies, communication. of their pain, evaluation of non-traditional treatments and more. More' than 600 people across Ontario have attended the rogram led by volunteers who have been trained by the society. Two progranis have been held in Whitby. Goldwater heads.health council At the annual meeting on June il, the Durham Region District Health Council (DHC) announced that Dr. Amy Goldwater will be chair for the comidng year. The.Minister of Health has been requested to ratify council's selection through ,-an -ordet-in- council. Goldwater, a resident of Ajax, is a child psychiatrist practising in Durham Region and is assocatad with the adoelscent unit of Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. Since her appointment ta council in July 1990, she has served as first vice-chair, chair of the executive comnittee for the past year and vice-chair of the mental health committee. In her role as council chair, Goldwater will also represent council on the Association of District Health Counils of Ontario. Goldwater replaces J.C. 'Cal' Muckle, who was chair of the council for the past two years. Other officers for the council were also announced at .the annual meeting. Susan Underwood, is the upcoming vice-chair and Vern Garlick returns as treasurer. The executive committee members-at- large are Gerald Blake and Dr. David Fitzpatrick. District health counils are responsible for advising the Minister of Health about regional health and health service issues based on local planning. Muckle noted that during the past year, council has been prepaning for planning health care systeni restructuring, following changes announced by the government of Ontario.
