Wednesday, June 30.,1993 Druinm: Town should recover needlêss 0MB eosts By Mike Kowalski Whitby councillor Joe- Drumm ne longer wants the cost of «fri- volous" objections te council deci- siens borne by the taxpayer. Drumm urged ceuncil Monday te approve a motion which weuld seek reimbursement of the Town's costs of fighting "unrea- senable" Ontario Municipaýl Board (0MB) appeals of its deci- siens. The option te seek costs weuid only apply te objections filed by persons residing more than 400 f or awa fom the proposed pro- ject ordvelopment, and oniy if the board deemed the appeal te bo "frivolous or vexatieus» in nature, Drumm said. Hewever, council opted te have Drumm's proposai scrutinized by staff from both a legal and plan- ning perspective and did net discuss it. But prier te his motion boing deferred, Drumm outlined his reasons for preposing it. Drumm stressed that hie had ne preblem with appeals filed by persons living with n the 400-ff. (120-metre) parameter as the provincial planning act provides. "But for the sake of a 48-cent stamp, anyone can object,» he said. Noting that an average hear- ing can cost the Town $7,000 te $10,000, Drumm said taxpayers should net have to foot the bill for what the 0MB may ulti- mately consider a «fivolous" apjpeal. Hie said the policy, if adopted, should apply to individuals, groups an d usinesses. "If you'>re going to object, you shoul d put your money where your mouth is," Drumm said. Should council decide not to invoke such a policy, Drumm suggested the O ntario govern- ment may be able te offer assis- tance. "If the province is serious about helIping municipalities then let them grant intervenor funding and get it off the backs of our taxpayers,» he said. Drumm's motion was net the first time this matter has been raised. Enrlier this year council was informed that Dunlop Street residents Frank and Suse Eggert P THE REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY 0F DURHAM DURHAMNOIE0 PUBLIC MEETING TAKE NOTICE that tre Regional Planning Committee will consider at a meeting to be held on~: TUESDAY, JULY 13 193 AT 10:00 A.M.
