Fourteen years after it was first promised, the province is finally coming threugh with $133%5 million te build a new psychiatrie hespital. Construction of the 325-bed hospital, te ho built on an 86- acre part of the present Whitby Psychiatrie .Hospital (WPH) site, will boi n this Nevember. The hospital is -scheduled te open in December, 1996, and will include a 38-acrelakeshere park for public as well as hospital use. more than 20 of the cottages, which date back te 1915, have been deemed histerically signifi- cant and will be saved; the oth- ers will likely be tomn down. The equivalent 'of 2,200 one- year construction jobs will be created in building the new hos- pital, promised Oshawa MPP Alan Pilkey, w ho officiaI ly announced the project te a crowd of about 350 hospital staff, patients, politicians and press at a news conference last Wednes- day.
