Peleg will be performing Lale's Symphonie Espagnole, Opus 21, as part of a prograni of 'Romantic Masterpieces.' Other works to be performed are Mussorgsky's 'KEhovantychina: Introduction' and Tchaikovsky's 'Symphony No. 5.' The Symphonie Espagnole is Lalo's (1823-1892) best-known work. Although a French composer, he was attracted te the Spanish style of music, and for good reason. He had Spanish blood in his ancestry and, at the time of his career, ail things Spanish were very trendy in Paris. The concert will open with a performance of the Introduction te the opera 'Khovantychina' by Mussorgsky (1839-1881). The opera was neyer completed by Mussorgsky himself, as he died fron chronic alcoholism before its completion, but was flnished a year after his death by his friend Rimsky-Korsakov. It was the second in a planned trilogy. The Introduction is a musical description of sunrise over Red Square in Moscow. The final piece on the program îs Tchaikovsky's 'Symphony No. 5'in E minor, Op. 64. This work was composed after a long period of time during which Tchaikovsky was not producing much of any consequence. Eventually, in the summer of 1888, he resolved te write axiother symphony. The first performance took place in St. Petersburg in November of that same year and was well-received. Each subsequent performance met with mounting public acclaini, and he went on te compose even greater works including' the Nutcracker Ballet and the Sî th Symphony. The concert will take place at Eastdale Auditorium, Harmony Road and Adelade Avenue in Oshawa, at 8 p.m. Ticket prices are $20 for aduits, $18 for seniors and $12 for students, and are available at Saywell's in Oshawa, Discs and Dats in Whitby and Rickaby's in Bowmanville.
