Wltby opened the preliminary round with a 2-O victory over the host teain, with Andrew Gubbels earning the shutout. Wihitby carried the play to their opponents throughtout the gaine and only excellent goaltedng plus a tenacieus Gelig Park defence were able te hold thein te two goals. Mike Gubbels scored midway through the first period, assisted by Nick Cowan. The second tally came early in the third period by Matt Walten with the assist going to Mike Gubbels, named gaine MVP for Whitby. Mike Gubbels and Scott Messenger led the scoring, each with two goals and an assist; Jason Turkingten and Matthew Walton had singles. In the final preliminary round gaine, Whitby faced East Gwillirnbury which opened the scoring early in the first period. Whitby battled back to take a 2-1 lead at the end of the first Police hold tournament Durham Regional Police 'viii hold a basketball tournament and dunk contest at Durham College on Thursday, April 1. Whitby had a goal by Taylor called back and this seeined te give the St. Annes teain a boost as they scored with less than two minutes te go te make the score 3-2. This led te a wild finish as St. Annes puiled their goalie te try throughout the tournament Whitby caine out flying anc1 carried the play te, the opposition in the opening period. matt Walten opened the scoring, assisted by Mike Gubbels and Matthew Walton. Messenger, with Cam Munro assisting, miade it 2-0 mià dway through the period. Goulding Park scored three minutes later te narrow the margia te, one goal but Whiùtby bounced back less than a minute later as Messenger scored on a nifty solo effort to restore the two-goal margin. Goulding Park pressed the action throughout the second period but Whitby met the challenge and held them off the scoresheet for the rest of the gaine. The third period saw Whitby carry the play and record two goals for a 5-1 final. Messenger completed the hat trick with assists by Tennant and Richard. Mike Gubbels rounded out the scoring assisted by the two Waltens. Messenger was the gaine MVP. This was the teain's best performance of the year as they outskated and outhustled the and tie the gaine. Whitby withstood the pressure and won 3-2. Whitby came out fast and storrned te a 3-1 first period lead on goals by Beckford, Cook and Besco. Assists went te Kobrynovich, Astalos, Rae and Taylor. Second period penalties te Whitby gave Lakefield new life and they responded by scoring three goals in the second period to take a 4-3 lead. Besco, assisted by Rae, scored early in the third period to even the score. Lakefield scored two unanswered goals to skate te a 6-4 victory. Whitby MVP for this gaine was Taylor. PLAYOFFS In North York select league playoff action, Whitby is tied 1-1 in gaines with Leaside. Wh-itby won the first gaine 3-0 with Rae, Besco and Astalos scoring. Assists went te Andrew Allison, Rae and Mike Liske. Leaside won the second gaine 2-1 by scoring the winning goal in the last two minutes. Chiasson scored the Whitby goal unassisted. It was the first ioss for Whitby in select league action. Whitby's success is attributed te the ' total teain' style preached by the coaching teain of Leule Atkinson, Paul Cook, Mark Sargent and manager Geof Michie.
