The Whitby team, sponsored by Brooklin Lions, and Kitchener engaged in four close, thrilling matches in the OMHA best-of- five final. But Kitchener was unable to win a game, managing only an overtime tie in the third game to stay alive in the series after Whitby had won the first two games. Whitby won the fourth game 2-0. The game was scoreless until the third period when Josh Huether scored on a wraparound from behind the net. Ryan McArthur assisted. Kitchener pulled their goalten- der in the late stages for an extra attacker but Huether found the empty net for the insurance marker. Derek Ackford and Stacy Bremner assisted. In the fourth and final game, played in Whitb , Whitby was without regulars kul Cook, Paul Heinrich and Ryan Babcock. Luke Power, an affiliate player, s teppdin and played well. Whitbly won the first game of the series in Kitchener on March 6 by a score of 2-1. Justin Terry opened the scor- in g assisted by Bremner and Babcock, but Kitchener tied it in the second period. But Whitby came back and tied the score with goals by Schleiffer, Chornobay and Huether, to produce another overtime session that went score- less. Whitby swept Guelph in three straight games in the finals. In the first game, Whitby came out hitting from the first whistle, took an early lead and neyer looked back, winning 3-2. Dan Thorne opened the scoring in the first period, assisted by Peter Liriano and Ryaa O'Leary. Midway through the second, O'Leary set up Thorne for his second goal of the game. O'Leary finished off with his third assist of the game early in the third, setting up Liriano with Whitby's final goal. Whitby got into a bit of penalty trouble late in the third and allowed Guelph to close the score with a couple of power play goals. Whitby outshot Guelph 21-17. Whitby travelled to Guelph for the second game and in front of a noisy crowd demonstrated what strong frechecking and solid bodychecldng are aIl about. Highlighted by Scott Gilmour's check on Guelph's star player, a bump that would qualify for Don Cherrys next Rock'em Sock'em video, Whitby out-classed the opposition 4-1. After allowing an early short-hianded goal, the Whitby squad responded quickly, with Paul Gray scoring fromn Grant Souter and Ryan McLeod. Brian Vinent got the next goal midway through the second period with a nice setup from Toédd Farquharson. Early in the third, Souter put the gamne away with a power play goal assisted by Jamie Barnett. Gray and Barnett set up Souter for the final goal of the gamne. Rich Sanders played a solid game, particularly on four straight short-handed situations in the second period. Whitby outshot Guelph 32-17. The third game was back in Whitby Iast Thursday night. Led by Matt Quart's bat trick, the home team flnished off Guelph 4-1 and wrappcd up the series. Quart got bis first goal early in the initial period, assisted by Gilmour and Gray. Although dominating the play, Whitby did not score again until the final minute of the second period when Quart was set up by Gilmour and Barnett on a power play. Sixteen seconds Iater, Quart flnished off his hat trick, again assisted by Barnett. Gray rounded out the scoring in the third period with assists from Gilmour and Farquharson. Whitby again outshot Guelph 27-21. Other members of the team are Scott Young, John Lange, Ryan McLeod, Dan Besco, Aaron Bryant and Dan Fletcher. Management includes TMm Weber (coach), Mike Thorne (assistant), Rob Olenick (traîner) and Peter Lang (manager). Whitby>s record thus far is 42 wins, 14 losses and four ties. Lon don again tied the score, but Kitamura mnade it 3-2 as he scored from Mark Cipparone and Scheepers. Chris Trinkunas made it 4-2 on the shot from the point, and then Tait scored on a passing p lay with Rourke and Meaney. The score was 5-3 after two periods, and Whitby shut down Lndon with strong checking in the third period. The Iîne of Reece Rlobertson, David Morasse and Sean Holmes kept the pressure on in both directions, while the defence of Rayn Mendes, Dana Bloom Lucas Harden, Cipparone and Trinkunas was solid, holding London to 15 shots for the game. Goalies Joshua Hughes and Michael Thoraton were strong throughoýt the sieï-es, shutting down London's big g-uns. Tweens beat rivais, win tournament The Whitby Lioness tween B ringette team captured the cham pionship at a tournament in Bar-rie over the weekend. Whitby was outplayed in the first game agaîinst the Pickering petite A team but got strong goaltending from Heather Hlurst and two late goals to win 4-3. In the second game against longue rivais Pickering tweens, Whitby dominated in ail areas and built a 5-1 lead, and held on for a 5-3 win. Whitby then shut out Barrie 3-O, and in the division final, a rough affair with strong goal- tending, Barrie won 2-1. But Whitby advance~d to Lhe champ ionship final and again met Pickering tweens. Whitby jumped out to a 6-O load and then held off a lnte-charging Pickeringteam to win 6-3. For the tournament, Angela Dunn had 12 goals and three assists, BreaBlu ght three goals and four assists, indsay Millard threo goals and three assists, Lori Barchard a goal and four assists. The Whitby novice #1 team won gold in the novice minor division of a ringette tournament in Woolwich recently. WVhitby overwhelmed Wcol- wich 15-3 in the first gamne, and skated past Seaforth 13-4 in the second garne. Scoring for Whitby in the tour- nament were Michelle Leni, Kristy Kotarba, Joanne Boys, Katie Boys, Racheal Stewart, Cry stle RKrasnaj and Catie Osborne.
