Whitby started off their best of five series in the OMHA finals against London with two consecutLve wins. Whitby won the opening game ini London on Saturday 3-1. The first period was penalty- free and scoreless as both teams played disciplined hockey. London opened the scoring in the second period on a power play, but then Wihitby got rolling with a tying goal by Ryan Meaney, assisted by Paul Tatî and Chris Trinkunas. Whitby outshot London 14-4 ini the second frame. David Morasse scored early in the third, assisted by Dana Bloom, to give Wihitby a 2-1 lead. End.to-end action and a flurry of penalties resulted as both teams opted te keep up the offence. Meaney scored a power play marker, assisted by Ryan Harris with 4:25 left, to put the game on ice. Goaltender Michael Thornton came up with many key saves te hold London to only one goal. Coach Flip Rourke felt Whitby played their most disciplined hockey game of the season. Whitby won game two of the series 4-3 in Whitby on Sunday. London went on full offence in the first period, with goalie Joshua Hughes playing well, stopping 13 shots. The home side got rolling in the second' period, scoring two goals as they outshot London 11-4. Lonc4on scored late in the second period to narrow the score to 2-1 for Whitby. Reece Robertson scored early in the third, assisted by Morasse and Sean Holmes. llowever, London replied 18 seconds later to stay within one goal. With five minutes left, Ben Scheepers redirected a shot by mark Cipparone, also assisted by Kyle Ruttan, to provide an insurance marker. London didn't give up, scoring with 2:29 left, but the Whitby offence at the end of the game stopped any further London attack. The lime of Gary Kitamura, Ruttan and Scheepers combined for eight points, including three goals. Whitby defeated London 6-5 in a thriller on Sunday. In the first period,' London a solid, well-balanced team, scored the first three goals. With only 50 seconds remaining in the first period, Whitby's Shane Terry, assisted by Simon Giguere, put Whitby on the scoreboard. In the second period Whitby took control and put three goals in their opponent's net while Matt Visconti was strong in the Whitby net. Whitby started off with an impressive 11-5 win over the host Ajax team. The second game saw Whitby start slowly against Mariposa, before catching their stride and winning 8-3. The third gamne again saw Whitby off to a slow start before besting the Paris team with a solid 7-2 victery. Whitby played its best ringette of the season in this tourney with a strong passing game and solid team effort from every player. Tihis set the stage for the championship gaine that matched Whitby against their Port Perry rivaIs who aiso went undefeated in the preliminary round. As expected, the two evenly matched teams both played a superb game, with Port Perry quickly jumping out te a two-goal lead, before Whitby regrouped and tied the score and emerged with a 3-2 lead after the first period. The teains traded a pair of markers in the final period and Whitby was able te hang on and wmn a real thriller 5-4. Whitby goalie Christine Parrott repeatedly shut the door on the Port Perry attackers Terry, Justin St. Onge and Zac Aitken, with assists going to Chris Stevens, St. Onge, Chris Hartwell, Brad Harrison and Giguere. With five minutes remaining in the third period, Aitken scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Craig Lanegger and Chad Parker, to extend Whitby's lead. But London fought back and scored twice in the next sevea minutes te tie the game. With 2:07 remaining in regulation time, Lanegger scored, assisted by Mark Reid and Paul Webb, to give Whitby their first win in the finals. Came two is at Iroquois Park on Saturday, March 13. during the final minutes of play. Every inember of the Whitby squad hit the scoresheet during this tourney, with Corinne Richter leading the team with 12 goals and six assists. Cynthia Whaley had seven goals and three assists, Christina Baldasti six goals, three assists, Lydsay Smith three goals, four assists, and Andrea Perry, three goals and one assist. Assists went to Teresa Budgen, Nikki Baldasti and Sara Meaney wvith three each, while Sara Crawfbrd hiad two and Anie Pattison and Shandie Whittle each had a single marker. Brrton second in sprint Andy Brereton of Whitby had a second-place finis h in the 55- mietre sprint at a track meet in Michigan recently. Brereton, a track star when he attended Anderson CVI, is a freshman at Western Michigan University. A member of the university's track and field team, Brereton had a time of 6.36 seconds for the 55m event, establishing a school freshmnan record. He was seventit in long jump, with a leap of 23 feet, 7 inches. Western Michigan was second in the eight-team field at the meet, the Mid-American Con- férence Indoor Invitational. A victory over Peterborought tenight (7 p.M ) at Iroquois Park will clincit the hard-fought, six- point series, with each team having five points. It's been a see-saw series for coacht Buck Crouch's charges following earlier series wins over the Central Ontario Wolves and Oshawa Kinsmen. The first game in Peterborought on March 1 resulted in a 2-0 setback with goaltender Tom Lawson facing 20 shots and his team-mates countering with only 10. The game was a heartbreaker for Whitby as botit Peterborought markers were scored while Whitby was shorthanded. Strong efforts were turned in by the defensive pairings of Don Campbell and Dan Ricica, Adam MacCarl and Mike Cartwright, and Luke McKay and Matt Capson. Whitby tied the series on Marcit 3 in Whitby with David Farquharson leading the way with this two shorthanded goals. Paul Gray notched the third goal with assists from Mike Robertson and Jason Hotchkiss. Josit Evans was stellar between the pipes, turning aside .32 Peterborough shots. Whitby jumped into the series lead in game three with another 3-2 victery. Once again Evans made the différence as he was peppered with 41 shots -- 13 in the third peric>d and il in overtime. Hotchkiss opened the scoring off a setup from Bryan Croucit and Gray, then Mark Haynes notched his first of the series, assists to Justin Collins and Matt Capson. Steve- Deatit potted the game winner in overtimne with assists te Robertson and Farquharson. Haynes shone with his strong defensive play in this game. Came four was a blowout as Whitby staggered at home and Peterborought came Up with a 7-1 wmn. Darryl Lewis played a strong defensive role, making numnerous hits ail over the ice. Croucit notched Whitby's lone marker off a nice passing play from behind the net by Hotchkiss and Deatit. Whitby travelled back te, Peterborought on Marcit 7 and rallied for a great game which ended in a 6-6 tie. Evans faced 39 shots te his teammates' 25 te preserve the tie, and Whitby coaching staff credit a fantastic team effort te come back from the 4-1 deficit that they faced entering the third period. Whitby tied the score at 4-4 at the end of regulation time then traded two each te end up at 6-6 following 10 minutes of overtime. Farquharson paced the attack with two goals and an assist while team captain Hotchkiss notched one goal and two assists. Big Luke McKay cashed in a goal and assist with other goals from Haynes, Hotchkiss and Capson. Deatit and Lewis each had two assists, with single helpers by MacCari and Ricica.
