Harland is a graduate of York University where hoe began sing- ing tenor in the university's choir and classical repertaire. Ho became involved with clas- sical music when hoe had te choose a second fine art clase. Harland performed at Durham College where the Oshawa and District Council for Arts boeted a Valentine's Day fundraiser. Harland sang La Serenata, a Neop olitan love song composed b y Verdi. Harland feels the public is becoming more interested in, cînesical music becauso it is now more accessible. "Lt croates a mood," in movies and -draina and is a p art of the cireative procese itsel f." Now Harland enjoys toaching songe to bis six-month-old son, Luke. Harland also enjoys the techni- cal aspects of tenor Luciano Pavarotti' s pioces. Hie favourite pioces are fromn the music of Gerrnan tenor Jussi Beoroling. Harland will be involved in a recital in late May in Uxbridge. STEVE HARLAND Festival, Singers in concert The Oshawa Festival Singers will host a benefit concert on March 10 -in nid of Oshawa's Simcoe Hall Settlement House. Now in their 2lst year, the Festival Singers have won many honours in regional and national vocal festivals, and have toured in Canada, as well as in Europe. They are currontly planning a performing tour in tho U.K. for the summor of 1994. The four choirs will perform a variety of classical, traditional and popular music. Classical music becoming more popular, says Whitby tenor -M Matt Maxwell & Hie Band will performi at -Heydonshore Pavilion on Wednesday, March 17. The show a March break spe- cial, ie the fast in the Children's Concert Series organized by the WhIitby Public Library and Town recreation departmnent. The Matt Maxwell show is described as "an hour filled with rock and roll and plenty of fun!" and the entertainer invites pe.ople on stage to participate. M axwell bas been porforming in theatres and auditoriums across Canada. Tickets are availablo at al branches of the library. Tickets are $6 each or $20 for a family of four. Stages workshops in Oshawa Stages Theatre Workshops' spring session runs March 15-19 in Oshawa at the Arts Resource Centre. From 10 a.m. ta noon, a junior session (ages 7 to 10) uses theatre games ta encourage co-~ operation and confidence in self expression. Întermodiates (ages il to 13) will have fun exploring technique while doveloping vocal and physical awaroness, between 1 and 3 p.m. From 3 ta 5 p.m. seniors (agod 14 te 17) undertake a detailed investigation of improvisation, chaacrdevelopment and voice. Wildlife show at Whitby Mail Thore will be a wildlife exhibit at the Whitby Mail March 16 to 20. More than 50 species of North Axnrican animais will be in tho exhibit. Axnong the animais will be a polar bear, a grizzly from the Rockios, a puma, mule stag, wol- verine, musk ox and Arctic bovine.
