Wednesday, Febcuary 24,1993 Whitby's Cimco major peewee A hockey team has advanced to, the OMHA finals for the second year in a row by sweeping and Oshawa Dines Red Wings in three straight games. In the first game, Whitby had ta corne back, after trailing 3-1 in the second period, with three goals late in the game to, defeat the Wings 4-3. Brian Vinent had a big night with a goal and two assists. Single goals went ta Dan Besco, Todd Farquharson and Scott Gilmour, while assists went ta Ryan OLeary, Paul Gray, Pete Liriano and Matt Quart. Rich Sanders played a strong game as Wh-itby was outshot 29-16. In the second game back home, WhiWtby won 4-1. Farquharson scored in each of the first two periods, assisted by Vinent on both goals and Scott Young on the first. Quart scored early in the third, assisted again by Vinent, while Jamie Barnett scored the insurance goal into an empty net, assisted by Gilmour and Aaron Bryant. Although Whitby outshot Oshawa 27-15, Daniel Fletcher had to corne up with some key saves, particularly in the second period. On Sunday back in Oshawa, Whitby jumped to an early 3-0 lead and cruised to an easy 6-3 win to wrap up the series. Quart and Barnett led the way with two goals each, while Gray and Farquharson picked up one each. Barnett picked up a pair of assists, with singles going ta Quart, Gray, O'Leary, Dan Thorne and John Lang. Whitby has been in six taurnanients this season and has won three, was a finalist in another and was knocked out by points in the other two. In the first game in Port Perry, Whitby was against rival Ajax in an excellent game from start to finish that ended in a 6-5 victory for Whitby in overtime. Came two was against Stroud (outside of Barrie) and Whitby skated to a 3-1 win'. Came three, the final game of the tournament, was against the host team Port Perry. Whitby had a 4-3 lead with less than one minute in the game. Port Perry tied the game at the 38-second mark. But the ga me was not over just yet. Whitby's Glen Mayer got a breakaway and scored the winning goal with four seconds left in the game. Mayer was named taurnament MVP, with three goals in three games. In their quest for the all-Ontario championship, Whitby is playing the Oshawa Red Wings of the LNHL in the first round of playoffs. Whitby has a lead in the best-of-five. Whitby won game one 7-3 and game two 10-1. Canadian men's champion Shayne Bayford placed first in open figures and open Ioops and third in open world class Freestyle. Steven Pacholzuk piaced third in world class figures and advanced loops and second in open world class freestyle. Jeffrey Kidd placed fifth in world class figures. In the women's events, Pia Schmidt-Hanson placed third in freshmanlsophomore freestyle. Rebecca Woodhouse placed second in sophomore figures, open figures and freshmani/sophomore freestyle and third in open loops. Stacey Miller piaced second in solo dance. Jennifer Caukwell placed second in junior olympic il (JO) freestyle and third in beginner figures and JO Il figures. Gold for tweens The Whiby McCuilough Jeweliers Ltd. tween A ringette team won the god medai in the Oshawa tournament Feb. 19 to 21. Whitby played its best and most consistent ringette of the year, facing strong, eveniy rnatched teams that resulted in al games being exci ting matches. The first contest was against Oshawa, hosts of the tournament and league rivais, and resulted in a 3-3 draw. Sudbury was the next opponent and Whitby won by a 4-3 margin. A team from Nepean fell to Whitby by a 6-3 score. The game featured a penalty shot for Nepean. Goalie Samantha Sheppard pulled off the big save and propelled the team to a sure win. The only loss of the tournament came at the hands of Port Perry, 3-2. With a three-way tie for top spot, Whitby entered the championship game in first place because of its best plus-minus record, and faced second-place Nepean. In a very strong team effort and the excellent goaltending of Sheppard who faced a barrage of quality shots by the hungry Nepean teani, Whitby sustained the pressure and won the gold medal by a 1-0 shutout. For the tournament, goal scorers were Jennifer Penney with four, Ellen Johnson with three, Stacy Beatham and Callie Corneal wýith two each and single markers going to Melanie Davis, Dani Blenu, Lisa Vanderlip, Lara Hugel and Tania Chappeil. Beatham and Corneal each had three assists, Bleau, Davis, Vanderlip, Hlugel and Lisa Corcoran two each and Sarah Larocque with one.
