V»qnsoay, ikebray, u The Stanley Cup and the Memorial Cup are coming te Whitby on Saturday, Feb. 20 and Sunday, Feb. 21, and fans from Durham Itegion are invited te corne out and see the two moat sought-after trophies in hockey. 1993 is an historic year in the hockey comrnunity as the Stanle Cup is celebrating its lOth anniversary and the Memorial Cup is celebrating its 75tbu anniversary. Fans will be able to receive their photo with either the Stanley Cup or the Memorial Cup for only $5 each, or just $4 if they bring a canned food item te support local food banks. The photo will include a frame-mount for presentation and display. The trophies will he displayed between 7 arn. and 6 p.. on Saturday and 7 arn. and 5P.rn. on Sunday in Whitney Hall at Iroquois Park Mrena. In addition, fans will have a chance to bid on a number of sports collectible and other items at a sulent auction, being held in conjunction with the trophy showings. Included in the items available are two Eric Lindros-autographed Philadeiphia Flyers game jerseys and two Lindros-autographed gaine sticks, as well as autographed CHL Al-Star game jerseys from Alexandre Daigle and Chris Gratton, the two top-rated players for the 1993 National Hockey League entry draft. Bids for the sulent auction will be taken throughout the two days and will close nt 3 p.m. on Sunday. The event is being organized by the Whitby minor atom AAA hockey club, sponsored by Dundas Centre Guardian Drugds. Whitby junior Bs win 3rd silver Whitby's Midas Muffler junior B ringette team won the silver medal at a recent ringette toumnament in Pickering. Andy Brereton, a member of the Western Michigan University men's track team, placed sixth in two events Iast Saturday at the 1993 Central ColIegiate Con- ference indoor championships in East Lansing Brereton had a turne of 6.5 seconds for the 55 meters and 23.5 ft. in the long jump. The teain scored 77 points to place third in a field of 13 teams. Major atom AAA hockeyýq The major atom AAA hockey team sponsored by Elscint Canada opened their next series of the pflayoffs with a 5-38 bas to Oshawa last Sunday. Whitby advanced to the next round of the playofl's by defeating Ajax-Pickering 6-0 in a best three of five series. Whitby won by scores of 5-1, 2-0 and 4-3. The remaining games of the series are: Feb. 20, Children's Arena at 5 p.m., gaine #3, Feb. 22 nt Iroquois Park, 8 p.m., game #4, Children's Arena Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. and game #5 at Iroquois Park, 6:15 p.m. on Feb. 27. The teurnament started well with an 8-2 domination of Scarborough. Jennifer Cotton and Arnanda Wheelans each had two goals and two assists in strong two-way efforts. The second gaine was played aginst a very strong regional team froi Stratford. Whitby played well but was frustrated by a superior teain in a physical contest, losing 6-0. The third game was played against the home club froin Pickerirng. Whitby blew open a close 1-0 game early in the second haîf with a solid three goals and two assists from Wheelans. Gaine number four was played against a teugh. Markham team. Although pressing hard for a tying goal late in the gaine, Wihitby lost 4-3 but advanced te the final on goal differential. The first period of the tournament final was an excellent advertisernent for the sport of ringette. Both teains skated strongly in a clean, fast battle. The VWtby girls played tremendously and backed by outstanding goaltending froin Samantha Sheppard, Whitby was down 2-1 part way through the second haîf. Unfortunately penalties caught up with the teain, Stratford scoring twice on separate 2-skater advantages -on their way te a 6-1 win. Whitby's defense of Tanya Campeau, Jean Templeman, Megan Neilly and Anne Henderson played extremely well throughout the tournament, killing numerous penalties and limiting the high-scoring Stratford club to six goals in each gaine. Scoring in the tournarnent were Ainanda Wheelans (six goals, four assists), Kim Vanderlip (three goalà , three assists), Tamara Wiesiolek (three goals, two assists), Ellen Johnson (two goals, two assiste), Erin Carroll (one goal, four assists), Megan- Neilly (one goal, two assists), Anne Henderson (one goal, one assist), Jennifer Cotton (two goals, two assista), Erica Giles (five asaists), Tanya Carnpeau (four assists), Kistine Johnson (four assiste) and Jean Templernan (two assiste). Maksteelers beat Knsmen Whitby's major peewee AAA hockey teamn, sponsored by Maksteel Service Centre, defeated Oshawa insmen 6-2 in the opening gaine of their four out of seven Eastern AAA league playoff. Goaltender Tom Lawson turned aside 19 Oshawa shots to earn the win with the point scorers pnced by Steven Death's three point effort (one goal, two assists). Mark Haynes contrihuted two goals while Adam MacCarl and Luke McKay each scored a goal and an assist. Two helpers came off the sticks of Darryl Lewis, Mike Robertson and Matt Capson. A single goal was scored by Bryan Crouch and Justin Collins had one assist te wrap up the scoring. Strong defensive efforts were turned in by Mike Cartwright, Dan Ricica, Scott Gilmour and Matt Quart. The Maksteelers face Oshawa Monday and Thursday nights at Oshawa's Children's Aena with home matches at Iroquois Park on Wednesday night and Saturday afternoon. The Maksteelers travelled te Ottawa over the past weekend for the Cumberland Barons annual teurnament. While Whitby only managed a tie and one victory over four gaines, some players were recognized for their prformance.
