Page 1 8. Whitby FreePress, Wednesday, February 17, 1993 weII in heavy snow By Glen Konorowski Looking for a new vehicle, and MI have an urge to buy a pickup? You're not alone. About one out of every four Canadians who buy General Motors vehicles buy truclis. The biggest reasons are their honest value, durability and practicality. Today's truc ks are much more car-like than ever before. Manu- 4 truck buyers over the years have been using their trucks for more than just work. This has led to j . the car-like features found ini 4M many new trucks today. Over the Christmas season I had the pleasure of driving the Concept Monte Carlo at auto show Mygo into prduction soon By Glen Konerowski At the International Auto Show in Toronto, General Motors will show the Concept Chevy Monte Carlo. This slick-looking coupe is, as I hear through the rumour miii, very close to going into produc- tion this fali. The engine that should go into this carift makes it (write GM and tell them you like it) will be the Lumina's 3.4-litre double- overhead cam V6. I hear the wheelbase will be close to that of the Lumina, keeping costs down. Some of the features of this show car will be 18-inch wheels, dual exhaust, electronic muffler noise cancellation and anti-lock brakes. One other feature of note will be the windshield that will reflect the sun's ultraviolet rays. So if you go to the show, keep an eye out for this (I hope) soon- to-be-produced new car.____________________________________________ Chevy extended cab pickup four- wheel -drive (4X4). With aIl the snow we had just before Christ- mas, I was really able ta mea- sure the full extent of the truck's capabilities. This was one truck I would have ordered myself. The white exterior and blue interior make a great-looking combination. Most of the press vehicles I get are well-equipped and this one was no exception. Options on this 4X4 included power windows and locks, velour seats and door pads, tilt steering wheel, tinted glass and a tilt steering wheel. This may seem like a lot, but it really makes for a comfortable interior. Even though I arn not a fan of bench seats, the 40/60 split bench in the pickup was just g 1at generally found it h ad plnyof lower back support -- something that I instantly notice.- Other than the tape deck in the cektre of the dash, ahl the remain2tg controls were within easy reach. One big improvement ta t he interior is the gauges. The new readable and well l aid-out analog gauges are a big improve- ment over the aIder and uglier ones of the past few years. Under the hood of this Chevy 18 GM's tried and true 5.7-litre V8. Combine this with the 4X4 option andy ou have one un- stoppable pickup. No matter ho w much snow feIl, this Chevy could make it through effortlessly. I have ta admit that the exten ded cab pickup seemis ta be much better balanoed than the regular cab short box I drove some time aga. The longer length just seemed ta give the pickup that 'balance' that stopped the rear end from always breaking loose. Since most of the snow that feil that week was wet and heavy, it was a good test of the truck's pull capacity. The 5.7 (350 cu. in.) V8 with 190 hp and 300 IL ft. of torque easily pulled the truck with the load.
