By Elizabeth Hooper Club Carib, a multi-cultural organizatien, is building a Carib- bean cultural centre that is sche- duled te open May 1993. An organization for 26 years, the club has been trying toget a centre built for the past eight years but neyer had the finances. The club will be located at Wilson and Wentworth in Osh- awa, and the dimensions will be 6,000 sq. ft. With land and buil- ding, it will cost approximately $850000. The club raised the monejy te, build the clubhouse mainly through bingoe fundraisers. Club Carib of Oshawa Ine. was feunded in February 1966. It started out as a social club, where the Caribbean population of Oshawa could share common interests and develop a harmnoni- eus relationship. As the organization expanded, it became necessary for the group te obtain a charter. In May 1979, under the pro- visions of the Corporation Act, the organization was efficially known as Club Carib of Oshawa mnc. Club Carib is governed by an executive body consisting of eight members, an d elections are held bi-annually. An independent non-profit and non-political organizatien, the club currently has 80 adult mem- bers and 30 youth members. Without doubt, Club Cariîb has demonstrated the rele it intiânds te enact in the quest of fostering harmonieus relationships te bri g Durham Region and the Caribbean dloser together, te participate in other cultures and te share the rich Caribbean cul- ture. "Just about anyone can join the club -- we have Canadians, Caribbeans and numerous other cultures involved in the club," explains Antoinette Sealy vice- president and public relations chairpersen of Club Carib. «We do premete the Caribbean culture t hough, as our club is Club b Odfi&Oshawa," Sealy adds. The cultural programs form the major thrust of t he organiza- tien's activities and have, by far, the greatest ineasure of cem- munity involvement. The club's education program consists primarily of talks, infor- mation sessions and discussions conducted by guestspeakers at regular meetings. Social service activities focus on services te special groups, senior citizens and those in need. Musical shows are performed by the club's singers and youth dancers at nursing homes and hospitals.
