WVhitby's first bank robbery of this year aise occurred there. Police have charged one man, Steven Craig Sommerville, with three of the Canada Trust rob- beries, and two of the other heists in Whitby last yar -- a robbery at the Royal Bank's Brock St. S. branch and a hold- up at the National Bank on Dundas St. E. Staff Sergeant Jim Adams says the high amount of traffic on Thickson Rd. FBDB: 'Ontarlo entrepreneurs epreparing for recovery Indications at the Federal Business Develepaient Bank (FBDB) are that small and medium-sized businesses in Ontario are positioning themselves fer economic recovery. In the Oshawa area in 1992, the bank provided boans te, entrepreneurs totalling $9.5 million. Together, FBDB's Oshawa clients employ 1,800 workers. Througheut the province of Ontario, the FBDB authorized $122.3 million in new boans during 1992 which, in turn, created 728 jobs. Ail of the bank's Ontario clients employ 36,000 people. 'Almnost half of the boans we made te clients last year were for financing the purchase of land, buildings, machinery and equipment, says Frank Reiter, vice-president and regional general manager, Ontario. "We also continued te provide a large number of working capital loans te help srnall and medium- sized businesses te. impreve their cash flow positions. "Refinancing boans were aIse in demand te allow entrepreneurs te restructure their debt obligations. This has enabled entrepreneurs te botter position themselves te take advantage of business opportunities in the coming year." The FBDB's lending operations are self-financing. Revenues cover aIl costs. The bank borrows money that it lends te clients on domestic and fereign markets and repays it from funds it receives from clients. The bank aise held 890 workshops and' seminars throughout the province that entrepreneurs and business owners/managers, including 710 people from the Oshawa area. The bank offers a wide variety of business training programs that cever general management, marketing, finance, personnel and starting a business.
