Carried Region supports freeway link in west Whi*tby By Mark Reesor Durham council has voted 18- il te, support an eight lane Hwy. 401/407 link through west Whitby. The decision came despite im- pasoed pleas from residents' cm ttee member Gary Parkin- son and Whitby regional council- lors against the 'technically pre- ferred' DMZ route, that would cut a wide swath between Halls and Coronation roads. Council approved a joint plan- ning and works commîttee recomnirendation te advise the Ontario Minisr of Transpor- tation that DM Z is the most appropriate location to provide a freeway link... in this corridor» and requested the ministry te "mitigate ?otential impacts» of the link, 'particularly to resi- dents in the Town of Whitby, during the preliminary design phase" of the project.» Despite the setback, Parkinson isn't giving up. He says the battie against the freeway link, which he compares to having the Don Valley Park- way next to one's home, is only begining. "is is just one meeting;, nothing's been resolved," stresses Parkinson, who says he was pleased by the large turnout at the meeting and the interest and help he's received. H1e urges residents to not give up the flight. Whitby regional councillor Marcel Brunelle sa,'s Durham "is totally out of line' in giving its blessing to the link before it's undergone an environmental assessment act (EAA) process. The Regon has always said it shouldn't take a position in an EAA process, says Brunelle, «but they'.re doing it on this road... sucking and blowing at the same time." He was disappointed by the vote -- "We felt we had a shot." Brunefle, Whitby mayor Tom Edwards and regional councillors Joe Drumm and Ross Batten urged council to receive the works and planning committee reports as information, but not approve them. The transportation ministry has overlooked or ignored a lot of important factors which would makçe a Lakeridge Rd. link su- perior te, the technically prefer- red route, Brunelle told council. For example, he says an inter- change is pianned at Lakeridge Rd. and the 401, less than a mil from -the major interchange for the DMZ freeway link, yet the cost or savings if the two are combined, was not considered. He says the same situation would occur at. Lakeridge and 407 - two major interchianges less than a mile apart -- the cost is not factored in and it's damned expensive.» Th ere are plans te expand Lakeridge Rd. to six lanes, says Brunelle, which would have a major impact on residents bet- ween the two roads. "Can y ou imagine what it's going to be like te be the Almond subdivision (Lakeridge and Dun- das), and have an eight-lane highway, a six-lane highway, Hwy 2, which is now four lanes, and the 401? "You Cap ut in barriers al you wat tis is goin gtebe a no-mani's zone. We ta&k about DMZ - it means demilitarized zone - these poor folks are going to be driven out of their mind with noise and cut off from the rest of the world." Parkinson told council west Whitby residents aren't against progress or the construction of new highways,, but do oppose where the ministry chose to p ut this one and the process thiey SEE PAGE 16 Whitby Free Press.
