m~ty re res: We&rday, February 10, 1993, Page 9 Whithy P By Mike Kowalsld Whitby's only public outdoor swimming pool wil close. Town council Monday appro- ved an operations committee recommendation that the 40- year-old Kinsmen Pool be closed and removed later this year. Council feit that a potential $150,000 repair bill and declin- ing usage did not warrant keep- ing the Byron St. N. facility operating any longer. Instead, a water spray pool similar te those at Rotary Cen- tennial and Watson Street parks will be installed in its place. Although a source of contro- versy in the past, no one at Monday's meeting favoured keeping the pool open. Council agreed with councillor Joe Drumm that the pool had simply outlived its usefuinese. "L1t's the end of an era in Whitby, I'm sad to see it go," said Drumm. "But we simpily can't afford te' put $200,000 into it this year and in five years do it again,» he said. "I'm sorry to see it g0 but I don't think there's aniythin)g we can do. We're losing it because it's outlived itsef, Drumm added. Council had wanted to close the pool last year b ut after protests from resiclents, post- poned a decision on the pool's fate for a year. Usage was monitored on a daily basis to see if it improved. Last September parks and recreation director Larry Morrow reported that 1,939 people used the pool in 1992. This compared te 2,296 at the Anne Ottenbrite pool and 10,205 using the Rossland Rd. recrea- tion centre pool., Jewelry stolen Jewelry worth more than $4,000 was stelen after a break- in at a Kilbride Dr. house last Thursday. Police say the culpri«(s) foroed open the front door sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. and searched the residence but didn't take anything else. An investigation is continuing. *T e ep nbl tyu e " Heavy duty shelves DOM ESTIC MAY1?AG HOME APPLIANCE CENTRES 22 STEVENSON RD. at KING ST. (a=ucorosh < sawa Shcopq ~Contre> OpsicMm. Councillor John Doîstra ad mit- ted having reservations about closing the pool. But keeping the pool open would be contrai'>'to the message contained in this year's budget (see separate stery), said Doîstra. "We're looking at a zero per cent budget this year. If we were te, review this matter we're look- ing a another $200,000 or more,» he said. Mayor Tom Edwards concur- red with the sentiments expressed by Drumm and Dol- stra. "I considered this matter with some sorrow, (but) we went through this exercise in '91,» said Edwards. uWe tried to hold on te it but we couldn't do it " he added. It cost the ']own $50,399 to operate the Kinsmen pool last ~ar, $9,000 less than what had n udeted. The difference was attributed to repair costs being «minimized" and to volunteer work by the Kinsmen Club. PERONLNE 01MRY. W W ,BY* 6-97 Ail across Ontarto ,winnng is catching on.
