It may be just a question of when that amount wili be raised. The deadline is Dec. 31, and there is some doubt that the goal will be reached by then, due ta the recession. According to chairm'an Harold Whitbread, $2,036,284 million has been raised after seven weeks of the campaign for Osh-ý awa-Whitby-Newcastle. He said the 65 per cent of the goal reached is due to the generosity of the community and that residents have responded well to the challenge. «Everybody on the team is very confident,» he said. "In what is a taugh economy it puts a littie fun into it " he saxd. Whitbread said ïfie* United Way bas about 2,000 volunteers in the area ta help raise monýey for the 42 agencies that require United Way funding. Those agencies include the Red Cross, YMCA, Salvation Army and St. John Ambulance. "T'his program is there to help Support theé United Way pepein our conununity today,» he saI. Kinsella said some agencies are cutting back on theïr pro- grams because of the lack of money available.
