College president Gary Polonsky expected a 10 per cent increase overall this year. «We grewï enourmously", said Polonsky. «We are up by about 16 per cent and have increased 27pe cent in our tech division.» Te fulI-time student increase May be partly due to the races- sien and liigher unemployment. «We are growing more than, other collages,» Polonsky, said. "Our focus is to provide caring and qýua!ity education and the word is getting out to the high schools.»ý While more Durham Region high school studen~ts arelooking at the collage, the outside nxarket is also expanding. With every academic division axpanding at Du'rham staff requiraments have been aiterad. «We havan't staffed up for this yaar but our departmnent heads and suppor7t staff re ba.ck in the classroom.» When Polonsky took over as presidant of Durham College a few years ago, ha helped to lay out a plan to boost the profile of the college and increase pro- graming >and anrolmant. Says Polonsky: "It's like Ben Hogan once said, 'TMe harder I work, the luckier I get.tm .. .*.**. .*.. .*.*. .*. . . . . **.. * ... . '* ' ** . . . . . .... . . . *.. . . . By Carmen Nisbet Anderson welcomes students back' again for another long year. The high achool- is already bustling. with activity after just two ýweeks. Sports teama' tryouts and other activities have been in progress aince day one. Assignments and quizes have students starting the year in earnest. Anderson is once again packed this year with students firom al over, the area. The. population of the school is 1,700 ýstudents, and there are now 18 portables. The school is agan filled with many new faces, the grade nine and other students who have trai ferred firom other schools. Every year these new students corne and become a part of the Anderson spiit,. The'ifirst day of school is the most difficuit for the grade nine students. Ail may be unfanuliar* with a large school, and there is a high probability of getting .lost during the first week . An exaznple - of an embarrassng moment for a grade nine student .la walking int.o a wrong, classroom. Also there is always the nagging, underlying fear that they don't know many people ini the school. Hopefuily by now, the adjustments are being made. The year ahead lookoe to be a good. one, filed with fun and hard work. Good luck, Anderson. r~ flTU r~ ?~ "SWING SET" Preseritly takfig orders for thi s piece Choice ýof Triple Mat land Frame Vgroove ,an.d Non Glare'Glass 4.
