A time for reform By Edis Gomîlle "We'vs been mlsled. 'm sick and tired aiof V The sound ai many hands clappinq in the 100-plus audience, including mine, underscared this indignant, resolutety delivered statement by a Whitby citizen last Wednesday, Aug. 14 at the Reiorm Party ai Canada's first local informational meeting. Citizens Iocally, pravinciaily and nation-wids are ied up wit h high taxes, a higher deficit and low accountability. The Ontario Taxpayers' Coalition, seeking greater contrai over municipal taxation, is growing: over 40 coalitis have been iaormed. A courageous Whitby citizen, James Sadier, fed Up with iesosible taxation. recently d=iedta withhold 10 per cent of his property taxes. The state ai the economy, job loss, environmental deteriaration worry us. The Faorm Party of Canada, founded in Winnipeg in 1987 ta work for construc.tive changes in the ioderai systsm, is addressing many aof these cancenrs, and is consequently fast becoming a national party ai note. Only three g ars aiter ifs inceptuon, the party as 50,000 members (according ta the pamphlet; 85,000 according ta a speaker that evenin9), compared ta the Conservative Party's 212,00; it received 275,000 votes in the 1988 ioderai elect ion. Other. successes:, ,Deborah Gmy. 1' ths RForni Party' irst Memblter oi Parliament, was electsd in the, Beaver iver March 1989 by-eiectiain,' taking. almost hall the votes in a iaur-way contest; Reformer 'Stan Waters was appointed ta the Senate in 1990, defeating the closest ai his six rivais in the Alberta Senate nomination by a 2-1 margin. True, E.. Prestan Manning, president and chief consultant for an Edmonton cansulting iirmn and the Reiorm Pcàrty's president, conveys sincerity, integrity and honest niceness (puhleez, don't mislead me, Preston>, but most ai the party's appeal cames fram the common sense, taughness and sanity aifits principles anid policies: it has put grassroat cancerns and convictions on the political agenda. (Okay, okay, thet ans wasn't too exhilaratmng, but read on.) Samne highlights fram this clear, detalled statement ai parliamrentary and other reforms are: *the Rofarm Pai'ty supports amendlng, the MP's oath ai office such that they swear or affirm fundament'al ,allegiance -ta their ca 'nstituents as wel as ta the Qusen. a binding referenda by a simple majority vote ai the electorate., a voters' initiatives by way ai a piebiscite. *allawing constituents a recali procedure against an MP they fesi has violated his/her oath af office. a apposition ta any assistance ta Fltclparties and polit ical robbies from public iunds.
