The derby' will take place June .i at 8 p.m. on the "W'esure the grandstands are going to be full," says Eldon Werry, organlizer of the event. There will be 30 cars involved in the three heats that lead up to the championships. .In a heat, ten cars are lined up, f ive on each side, with their trunks fading each other. When given the flag, they begin to move around the track, trying to knock other cars out of commission. . The winner, of the heat is the last car that is running" and able to move. ."You're out of luck if you can move but you're trapped in a corner by cars that can't move," says Werry. If the derby sounds.hazardous, acclording to Werry, it really isn't. Most of the cars just end. up with crushed1 fenders or they overheat becaue they've hit their radiator. "There aren't really ail that many injures because we really muddy up the track so you can t get going too fast," says Werry. There are also many rules a driver must follow before he 'or she can enter the derby, such as removing ail glass from the windows* to help keep the derby a little safer. "Before the car can enter a heat it must ha ready for inspection by the fair1 off ice," says Werry. Ayone interested in entering the race can:,contact the fair office at 723- 8602 and leave a message. There is. an entry fee of $22. A grand'prize of $800 wil be divided amnong the winners, and there is another prize for best decorated car. Brooklin Spring Fair 14
