Lffe is preclous Last week my wif gave birth to our first child, As eaty, happy 1beautful baby girl. A s« eured thi set precieus bundle of life afl iner child restraint for the journey home from 'the hospital -- ber vexy first car ride -- many different thoughts came te mind. Strangely enough, many of my thoughts were' about safe driving. A few das earlier I had been a guest on an open i.t show with twe other panelists, an O P.ofcer and a drivng school instructor. 'The three of us met for the firat tme at the studio minutes before the show went te air. We came from very different backgrounds and knowledge bases. Yet in responding te questions, aIl three panelists stated that the key :te reducing the number of accidents is for ail road usera te improve their attitude teward safety. It's flot; good. enough just to b. able to handle your car. Police statistics show that every year in Ontario alone, about 160,000 drivers are involved in accidents while they ;;re apparently "driving poerly.11 These 160,000 drivera include more than 600 fatalities and 60,000 prsonal injuries. Individuals who became involved inn somneone elses accident. Most of these collisions could have been prevented. SWhie no -one deliberately sets out te, becomne involved in an accident,. very. few of us. actively plan NOT te be involved i an accident. .Driving your own car iè reasonably simple. Avoiding potential accidents caused by someone elsels mistake is more difficuit. You must pay attention te, what other drivers, pedestrians and bicycists do. Watch for them te, make errors, they wiil. Identify mistakes early se that you have tfime te talce corrective action. Similarly, be critical of your own driving. Eight-five percent of drivers think they are better than average. Thirty-five per cent are wrong and the other fifty per cent are stI in trouble because the average is so low to, start with! As my wife, our baby and I started our trip home I suddenly realzedbow very, very important; it was for me te drive safely.* I was a littie surprise& and amused since I study safe driving, teach safe driving, write about safe driving and always practice safe driving. But this was different. Nothing, absolutely nothing could be allowed, te harm our daughter. (Or her miother or father.) My postive attitude toward safe driving became even stronger. While I was a highly motivated safe driver for this journey home, I was acutely aware that not; ail motonists shared my concern., .But for a moment it was wonderful te, think about how safe the roads would be if aIl of us appreciated the value of the lives we are transporting. While we can hope that other drivers change, the only thing we can really DO Is te improve our own attitude. iâfe is preciouýs. DRIVE SAPELVI y. ~s1. O ~~1 regional >economic and socal development.
